Sorry for the double question, but I wanted to keep them separate. This question is based on me using Market Samurai. Which btw is a great buy for $100. I suggest any newbies to SEO to buy this program and take the time to watch the videos on how to use it. I dont make any money nor am I an affiliate for them, but $100 is a steal. To my question: If one of my competitor sites is a big site like last. fm and they rank first for my keyword phrase, but they do not have any anchor text for my keyword phrase, not even in an PR0 sites. Then is it safe to assume that the keyword is a good choice? Is is still a good keyword when the total Google search results is 100M?
Nothing is ever "safe to assume" in SEO, but the competitiveness of a keyword can be only very crudely assessed by the number of results that Google returns. The true competitiveness is measured by the number of websites optimized for that keyword. If your competitor does not have your main keyword in backlinks (how do you know that? are you sure?) they may still have pages optimized for that keyword and thousands of backlinks pointing to them. That said, I have sometimes been able quickly optimize sites for keywords returning hundreds of millions of results quickly and efficiently, when no one was competing for those keywords.
