what search engine alexa based on?

I just wonder, is alexa rank based on google search engine only or combination with other search engines like yahoo, bing, etc..?

 

If I am not mistaken, it is proprietary technology. Alexa is owned by Amazon.com, and I think the technology came from their A9.com division (which used to be a regular search provider instead of just a technology provider like it is today).

 

Alexa rank has absolutely nothing to do with other search engines. It's owned by Amazon, and it's rankings are calculated based on the number of visits you get to your website that have the Alexa toolbar installed.

 

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they aren't based on any search engine. As Mervin said, they're owned by Amazon, and they only rank you based on who goes to your website through their toolbar. Don't use Alexa and don't worry about your ranking.

many people don't install there toolbar,but firefox with many alexa plugin,those counts~!

 

How important is Alexa? It seems that when people are trying to sell their sites in the for sale section, everyone is quick to post their Alexa stats but surely Alexa isn't that reliable? You say it only tracks stats through people using the Alexa toolbar but I don't know of anyone who has the toolbar installed.

If you are considering alexa as how they rank websites then you need to know that they consider traffic and its sources. Traffic from traffic exchanges and such illegal ways will not help your website get higher Alexa ranking. They consider many other factors which do includes traffic from search engines...

 

I think ranking is still important to find out how popular is the website
