se have sites that alexa ranks in the top 25,000 sites ... others that they rank in the 200,000 range (which we KNOW actually get more traffic than the one alexa ranks in the 25,000) .... also, we studied having one yes ONE person visit a site tht was ranked about 100,000 for a month ... one visit a day uisng their toolbar ... and it bumped the site up to 70,000 .... so that is HOW THIN their data is ... and som subject to manipulation .... it is a waste of time looking at .... much less writing about ....
I hate seeing people talking about how Alexa ranking actually has a meaning. I can have a 1,000,000+ rank, but I'm still earning a couple hundred a month.
Thing about Alexa is that it can be completely manipulated. If you know what your doing you can get it sub 1 Million easily, however since nobody cares if your alexa rank is high, nobody does it. Last time i heard they rank based on how many users visit your site that have the Alexa toolbar installed. Who has an Alexa toolbar anyways?
I check my Alexa ranking quite often despite it being useless and unrealistic. I like to have good rankings on as many things as possible, including another pointless measure, PageRank
I had pr3 and alexa 2.7mil rank several months ago and have pr0 but in top 200k in alexa now I would rather have my pr back )
Those who says Alexa ranking is a crap seems to be having a very poor ranking for their sites. Alexa ranking does have significance: - to get into many ad networks, if not all - while sell advertising space - while selling a site (it gives an indication whether the traffic is going up or down) Of course, its not accurate but you sure can compare traffic stats of sites having similar nature (you can compare two webmaster related sites, two file hosting sites etc etc). And Alexa themselves says the closer a site gets to #1, the more reliable its ranking is.
Alexa ranking isn't really accurate for small sites. You should check out compete.com or quantcast if you want more accurate results.
@ tintumon I definitely agree. The basis of their ranking is questionable since they only count those traffic which has their toolbar installed in their browsers. But, it's a sad fact that most online marketers and even business people give a big importance to a site's alexa ranking.
I'm not basing on it as a reality, but if someone says he has 30k visitors per month with an alexa rank of 16 millions something's wrong Just count it as a plus
Well, that's funny. So far I've monitored around 20 sites and only on one occasion Alexa was totally wrong. There was a formula that allows to convert Alexa rank into daily visitors (depending on the niches... housewives don't use Alexa toolbar). Sorry, mate, I don't know you but in all honesty I don't believe what you've said. I've tested this bump thing with an old indexed site that had lost its traffic and Alexa rank - there were two of us and we couldn't bump it back into any rank. It was still "Alexa n/a" Feel free to hate me because I think that Alexa is fairly useful. It is one of the parameters I consider when doing JV with people or buying/selling advertising. You cannot rely on Alexa only but as an additional tool it still has some usability. Right on! That's what I mean. Alexa can help you tell an honest webmaster from a swindler.
