What's the best religion?

I was thinking of converting to a religion, because I feel I need something more.

Christianity - all the Christians I've met were really nice but the religion just seems.. plain. No real conversion process which means many undesirables are let in, no real practices like in other ones, just.. pray and read the bible. There are some nice churches around the world but the ones I've seen are pretty drab.

Islam - very conservative people. No notable liberal or modern movement within Islam. Some verses in the Quran are downright oppressive and backward, (this one on wife beating)

    4:34 -
Islam has a conversion process including learning and studying more about the religion and Arabic. Has some practices which seem nice, praying in Arabic, making hajj and fasting on Ramadan and eating halal. Apart from going to Mecca once in my life I couldn't imagine ever going to an Islamic country. Theocracies are always a bad idea and I don't like the thought of going to countries with such oppressive laws where in some countries they kill gays in the street, and the practices that have come out of some of these countries like honor killings and female genital circumcision are barbaric.

Judaism - Has seven branches from ultra-orthodox who follow their religion literally. to the other branches which are more progressive and liberal. The views on women are much more liberal than in other religions. Conversion process for the ultra-orthodox branch includes studying with a rabbi for a year, learning Hebrew and getting circumsized. I can live without certain foods like pork (eating kosher) and I've had bagels before and you know, they're nice. They have a festival called Purim where you're meant to get intoxicated which sounds really fun. Plus I like the look of Synagogues, that star of David is just cute.

Which of these (or any others, I know this is only 3 of them) do you guys think is best? What about Hinduism?

What's the "more" that you believe a religion would provide to you?

The best answer is simple: none. You have one in a million chance of being correct, and therefor will end up hell. Might as well remain neutral on the subject. It's simply preposterous that religion is so widely believed in.

I would say that the OP can do much better by going indepth into the religions to decide which are more suitable for him rather than just through superficial understanding and contacts. If you know only these 3, I suggest going out to the world and check on the others. With more knowledge you will certainly find a religion that is most suited for you. Or you may be an atheist. This is a freedom of choice.

What is the point of exploring factious 2000+ year old stories/myths that match your values and then dedicate yourself to it? Why not just think about your values as a person and then behave accordingly. Do you really need to follow a religion to have morals, ethics, values, or whatever?

Survival within the Garden and the survival of this Garden itself whether chosen as a religion or not makes little difference but will still determine the outcome for each individual within it. As simply to say religion exists with or without mankind.

Everyone will tell you to go with their particular veiw in general OP

This is in peoples make up and nature just as disliking chnage is in peoples nature.

In the Bible it say's somewhere those attending Church do so sometimes for the wrong reasons (or words to that effect) so make up your mind and go with what feels right for you and if you feel something funny is going on let others know and perhaps they may be able to offer you insight either from experience or from a gut feeling they get in regards to your questions.

Seriously buddy, I would love to see you take an IQ test and please don't go posting some IQ score because you've already proven you can believe anything no matter how made up it may be.

Actually, there's a strong correlation between religious belief and IQ. Higher IQ individuals are incredibly more skeptical of religious claims and are the least likely to literally believe stories that conflict with actual empirical evidence. As far as the average IQs of people who believe particular religions, well Christianity & Islam are on the dumb side (and fighting over the title of dumbest IMO), while Tao and Shinto seem to be more popular on the intellectual side of spirituality.

I kind of like the Tao te Ching, but was mortified to learn more about the religion that sprouted up to capitalize on Lao Tzu's philosophy. I don't know much about Shinto but it sounds like a synthesis religion with a lot of emphasis on ancestors & the spiritual forces of nature - not terribly different than pre-Christian European paganism except in the details of ritual.

    Do you believe in God?

If you must convert, do so to a religion you believe in. Unless you hate women and want to oppress others do not become a Muslim.

You can always start a new religion and claim yourself as the messiah, everyone else does and why not you.
