Is back link exchange useful?

Is backlink exchange useful or just waste of time?
Because if you have a back link exchange from a similar page ranked website then the amount of page rank shared by that page will be compensated by the reciprocal link. i.e no gain, no loss.

On the other hand, if you exchange back link from a low rank page than yours, then you are loosing some portion of the page rank instead of getting some.

So I personally think that back link exchange is not useful for increasing page rank.

    What do you think?

Link exchange is not going to help webmasters anyhow in SEO in future and currently. These can only be used if you have a new website and want Google to reach your website. Other than that there is no use for it and even this phrase is backed up by Matt Cutt. You can find this on his blog..

exchanging links with relevant websites will help drive traffic to your website and also pass some link juice.

I don;t think you have read my post well! Read it even what the thread owner is asking and what i have posted. There is no way i have opposed backlink building method but opposed link exchange method...

And if you are new to this SEO world then you need to make sure that there are many more ways to build links.

And what Matt Cutt says....I have never seen him explaining any algo's...I would be very happy if you can tell DP members about what Matt Cutt told about google's algo. Please we will be really honored.

Backlink exchange is too complicated - "cut paste this logo code into your homepage html" (and make it look like a dog's dinner).

    That's what my point is.

Why would a person loose his portion of page rank if he's going link to a lower page ranked page?

Of course if you back link with a high PR web site, then the other person gets a backlink from low PR web site. So it would be a loss deal for him. Why would he do that?

Exchanges work if you are doing a 3 way exchange, and getting a one way backlink. This way you are giving an outgoing link to a different site than the one linking to you, which makes the link SOO much more valuable in google's eyes.

Exchanging links with popular websites is still useful when it comes to increase website traffic. However, for SEO purposes, it might not be as useful.

Link exchanges are a waste of time. What you need is high-quality, one-way links to your website because these are the links that will help you rank high on Google.

Not only does having loads of links to other sites on your website look terrible (And suspicious), Google will realise this and you may even be penalised. Google are getting smarter and smarter all the time, so I don't think it'll be long until they completely figure out 3 way link exchanges, too.
