Upgrade phpBB to vBulletin - how difficult?

Discussion in 'vBulletin' started by gil857, Sep 2, 2006.

I've started a forum recently and I'm using phpBB. I have read so many posts about phpBB getting hacked, so I want to change to vBulletin when my forum starts taking off. How hard is it to convert phpBB to vBulletin?

And is there any simple modifications I can make to phpBB in the time being, to make it a little more secure? I think I read somewhere here in DP that chaning the path of the admin directory might help.

    Thanks,

    Gil

The best thing you can do is keep your phpBB updated to the latest version, it'd be very, very unlikely you would get hacked at that point. 99.99999% of all phpBB hacked sites were running very old versions.

As for the upgrade to vBulletin, Impex (comes with vBulletin for conversions) is really easy to use. Just a few clicks and a few minutes and almost everything is transfered over (all the important stuff). The worst thing is the cross linking between posts that may have been done, but alittle 301 work should alleviate most of that issue.

    mdvaldosta,

Thanks for your answer, I feel less worried now.

Of course, I'm not going to get hacked right now because I have no traffic :D - but I'm working on that!

Updating is really wasy (especially so if your phpbb forum is new without too many hacks in it.....as long as you don't have the WYSIWYG hack from phpbb...it's way too easy)

I am also interested in moving to VB in near future though I am not quite sure about the procedures. Can we redirect the forum & post urls by any chance once we have moved to VB? I've a lot of pages indexed with major search engines.

I have moved a couple of phpbb forums to vbulletin recently, and it is painless.

There is also a nice add-on tool one of the VBulletin devs made so you can auto-forward old phpbb urls to new vbulletin ones. Works very well.

It's very easy to upgrade from phpbb to vbulletin if you don't wish to keep any mods.

vBulletin is the best forum scripts out there & very secured
    it can be easily managed
where IPB is now stealing ideas & features from vBulletin
