How Do I Install Magento Locally On Windows XP Pro?

Discussion in 'eCommerce' started by jvfconsulting, Feb 12, 2010.

I have a project right now that will be using Magento, but I cannot build it in production, I have to build it on my Windows XP Pro laptop before deploying. I am having the hardest time trying to do this with the latest stable build. Has anyone out there had success doing this, and if so is there a trick to doing it? Any info on this would help!

ehckk, that is going to be a nightmare really. I would suggest running Ubuntu in Vmware and actually set up server for this. Its pretty simple if you understand a lamp environment and how to set up no-ip.org so you can let folks see it if need be.

    hope that helps,
    Nigel

Thats a great idea, unfortunately we dont have a machine that runs Ubunto here. We have been looking all over the web, but there is no fix for deploying a local build of Magento.

    1. Download trial version of http://www.vmware.com/products/workstation/
    2. Download Ubuntu .iso and stick it on your desktop
    3. Install Ubuntu in virtual machine
    4. Install and config lamp stuff

Now, much like if your running linux natively you can browse to your stuff via localhost or you can setup no-ip.org so clients can see it right off your laptop :)

I did this on Monday in about 30 minutes less however long it took to dl Ubuntu.

    hope that helps,
    Nigel

Edit: Virtual Box from Sun Micro is free but I had a few issues with 3d acceleration breaking linux. You can use it but I would steer clear of trying to get 3d acceleration working on VB.

Yes Magento runs flawlessly in a windows environment if you follow the instructions I posted in the article. Why are you trying to knock me when the proof is in the pudding. http://bit.ly/bzJFCd

Ever thought of using JUMPBOX? Google it. You get access to many scripts using VMWARE images with backup etc.

I know its not free but it has saved us loads of time with Magento development and comes with lots of other cms dev machines too.

No problem, i find that its makes the whole scenario very portable and just works. Although we have full pay version of vmware for testing, im sure you can get away with using the excellent free virtualbox, the free vmware player or VMware server free.

You can download a free joomla jumpbox to try it out. Its pretty pain free to use.

I find that it's best to publish using a *nix box (or mac os x) if you want to test using your own machine. Windows is really asking for trouble and a headache.

you need some kind of local hosting environment. try LAMP installation, works especially well on Ubuntu. I'm sure you can have LAMP on windows as well, but it will prob take more work.
