You should maybe have to wait some time for google to index your website again...or change something in metatags...

There are many factors based on which a website is listed in the 1st page of Google, back linking is just one of the factors in it. you should concentrate on keyword optimization , also on the content of your website . hope that helps.

I just typed in soap making, or soap making tutorials or soapmaking tutorials... and thats what popped up. I the last link on the second page of google... which I guess isnt horrible for only having the domain registered for a one month (and being anti-black/white hat....)

How would I be able to tell a domains age??

Should I change what is currently there to make it higher indexed (like if you were running a site that was a craft tutorial directory)

what title would you use other than the one i have?

should I change the first few sentences of my site to include soapmaking, craftmaking, candlemaking etc... ?

This is where I am when I type in soap making tutorials:

    http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=soap+making+tutorials&start=10&sa=N&fp=a048890d3c90c6fc

when i type in craft tutorial directory:

    http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=craft+tutorial+directory&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&fp=a048890d3c90c6fc

If you wanna rank well for "soapmaking tutorial"

    Then do the following:

Make a site on your website like this.

    www. smfttutorials . com / soapmaking.php

    Title: "soapmaking tutorial"
    Headline: "soapmaking tutorial"
Mention Soapmaking and tutorial some times in the content.
Make it appear in the Meta description tag as well.

Go out and make some backlinks with the text "soapmaking tutorial" and let the links point directly to that page.

    awesome..thanks for the advice!

ok i have a page set up already here:

    http://www.smftutorials.com/soap_making_tutorials.html

Title and headline: Soap Making Tutorials

    For meta description tag:

<meta name="description" content="A comprehensive directory of soap making tutorials designed to give you access to all of the best soap making tutorials found on the internet in one place." />

    Is that good??

I will def work on making backlinks as you suggested. I am still learning the ins/outs of backlinking

use dashes, not underscores. there is a minor difference in caluclations according to google. also never use caps in your urls

on page seo. and if the keyword is "soap..." then it outranks you because of the keyword in the URL

Be patient and just wait for the next round of updates. I remember when the same scenario happened to me with one of our sites.

This could also depend on how you are getting the your competitors link count.

I have a music site that I run that is very popular in its niche market. I get hundreds of visitors daily and if you do a google search for dozens of keywords I come up near or at the top. However, if you run a "link:" query in google it shows one link.

This is poppycock I have thousands of links on indexed pages, google gives me great ranking in the SERPs but if a competitor were to look up they would be like "Why is this guy out ranking me when he only has one link?".

I guess my point is your competitor might have more links than you think he does.

Backlinks is not the only factor for scoring algorithm of Google. Google takes more than 200 signals for calculating the worth of a website, the domain age being highly counted amongst them. Check the registration date of the other domain which is outranking your site, using who is info.
