I'm considering a move to a new CMS, one that requires you use ID#'s for every article. Thus, I cannot move pages, articles without adding an ID# to the URL. For example, I've got a page ranking well for "blue widgets" at www.mysite.com/blue-widgets. If I move to this new CMS, I would have to place a 301 redirect to www.mysite.com/blue-widgets-ID# My hesitation for moving to this CMS is solely based upon some of my existing and well trafficed SERPs. Q: With a 301 redirect in place, will the addition of a ID# to a URL, will I lose my SERP's? This probably affects 5-10 pages in my site.
The page move will surely loose some of your Search visitors visitors. Don't try that until you are compelled to do that. And i think if you have good pr for old pages and build some good backlinks fro new p[ages you will be ranked better again within 1-2 weeks.
Everything gets transferred with a 301. That includes any Google seniority (once it respiders & indexes) and anyone visiting the site through an old link.
301 Redirects are permanent and you will not lose ranking. Your previous website stats will move over. Companies do this when they change their name, website, etc. Temporary moves are the redirects that hurt.
Permanent redirection also do hurt our traffic from search engines. Although we don't get hurt much but we lost some visitors. I have felt that myself.
Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm going to make the move and just be sure to set up the 301 ASAP for pages that I'm most concerned with.
