GoDaddy backorder now a scam?

From what I understand, thanks to GoDaddy's recent changes in how they run the backorder service (which I believe were changed in early '09) now if you backorder a GoDaddy registered domain, it automatically goes to auction after the redemption period expires. Is that correct? If so, how is this beneficial... paying $18.99 for the domain to go to auction (and get other people bidding against you if it's a decent domain).

Am I missing something or is GoDaddy's new "backorder" service just an $18.99 fee to guarantee the domain goes to auction? It seems like you may be better off with another backorder service (Pool, Snapnames, etc) instead?

ps. And on that note, the GoDaddy domain I'm looking at right now expired on January 9th and is currently in redemption period. Which day will exactly will it hit the open market? I thought it was 42 days for GoDaddy but I am hearing others say it can be 60 or longer?

We used www.dropsystem.co.uk and we paid them £30.00 and and they caught the domain we were after and transfered it over to us the next day. Super service.

If you read the fine print for this service, they do not guarantee you will get the domain. They only state they will "try" to get it for you. I like guarantees, not promises. What do you think?

The way it worked when I used their system is it did go up for auction but I was the only one that could view the listing and no one else could bid on it. Why they did this I will never know nor could their support tell me when I called them. He said that's how they do it....lol

GoDaddy backorders are the Worst! I've had a backorder credit for 3+ years now and have yet to catch a name that I try for. And I keep changing it, very often... no luck.. because they suck!

GoDaddy backorders stopped working a LONG time ago. And yes, you are correct, all domains registered with GD and affiliated domain registrars are auctioned off on TDNAM.

hmmmm but anyway, having a backorder doesn't guarantee you the domain name in anyway. Most domain owner will never forget to renew the domains they want.. :)

I've been using the GD backorder service a bit lately and have captured most of the ones I went for. (Some are still in redemption)

None of the backorder services can guarantee you get the name whether you pay $18 or $60. I prefer to pay $18.

No, but some drop catching services have more resources then others to catch the name. There is a reason you are paying more for the service. If you are trying to get a valuable domain, it would be worthwhile trying one of the other services.

Yeah, I suppose if it was a name you just had to have, then it might even pay to use a few of them to better your chances.

The whole backorder thing is a scam anyway, its putting a fee on a action - an action which cannot be taken if the domain's owner keeps the domain.
