Should I hire an SEO or optimize my website myself? I really want to get some good rankings for my site but I don't have a lot of money. Can I realistically expect to get some decent rankings without hiring a professional SEO to do it for me?

Sounds about right, so if you have the time do it yourself. If you cock it all up and get nowhere, well you know what you need to do then > "hire someone!".

You can do it by your own if you have a little knowledge about what your doing. Achieving good ranking is not hard, give yourself some time to read articles and e-books regarding SEO.

if your have 50% SEO knowledge so optimize your site to your way bcz some SEO fundamentals are same for each and every website but if your have only 10% or 20% knowledge so hire SEO person bcz some time you don't what you doing and some time your create mistake so google will get bad effect and you penalized by google.

 

It depends on how much time you can spend for learning seo and the learning curve associated with it. You can always invest some time and effort, in learning seo and doing it yourself, which you will then know about yourself the intricacies of it, etc.

If u r strong enough in the field of Optimization then u can for it.
And if your subject knowledge is very poor for the same,u should surely hire an expert.
