Would you mind sharing your results with other members if you'll give this a try? I'd really like to know if this is a "universal solution" or if it's just my niches' behavior.

Interesting. I get automated suggestions every month, but never one like yours :)

For me AdSense only suggests to add more Ad Units since that "often" generates more revenue, but from my own experience the more ad units you show, the lower your CPC gets.

    Cheers,
    Venetsian.

I don't use images in this format. Text performs best (both CTR and CPC).

Your original post inspired me to remove a lot of the 468x60 banners I had and replace them with the big rectangles, reformatting the layout of coarse.

I did this last night and today my CTR is almost doubled as well as payout. Time will tell, but so far so good.

Isn't this all obvious, you put a bigger ad on and people are more likely to notice and click

Oh, wow 2x CTR... Now I feel silly with my 20% increase:)))

So you use EXCLUSIVELY text ads, eh?

I guess I'll need to test that as well.

The only REAL reason for text ads performing better than image ads I can personally think of, is that the "third party networks" (all 86 of them) show ONLY image ads and not text ads (according to Google). So maybe by using text-only ads you're getting a better CPM from Google's direct text-ads in your niche as opposed to third party network (image) ads.

Will need to try this definitely. Thanks for the tip:)

I might be wrong, but I do not think so. Has to pay the same for link unit/text ads clicks, unless the link unit is undertargeted by advertisers for some odd reason.

It's good that your CTR increased from the change. To me, bigger ads attracts more clicks. Have you tried 336x280?

I'll give this a try once I get enough stats for 300x250 (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=13666941&postcount=35).

Seems like the right thing to do, if indeed bigger is simply better.

...at the same time, G specifically suggested to use 300x250 (although they could've as well said 336x280 - pretty much the same thing when it comes to changing a 250x250), and not 336x280.

So I guess I'll give this a try in a week or so (once I have a significant data sample for 300x250) and will let you all know how it worked out for me.

Text ads blend better into a site, and the user sees more choices per ad, giving more of a chance they will be attracted by one. Also, people naturally tend to follow text links rather then images. Images ALWAYS screem ADVERTISEMENT, even when they know the text ads are ads as well, the text links don't "scare them away" as easily.

For some types of content, there are also fewer (if any) image ads to be had. I agree that the Images scream advertisement. I actually want my visitors to know they are ads, but I don't want the cheesiness that comes with a lot of image ads. A simple text ad can be very enticing to a visitor if it's relevant.

Do you suppose it's just normal variance (not in the statistical sense) for a couple of days and has nothing to do with the change in the ads format given that you are comparing the mean with specific days? You know, a coincidence?

Interesting you mention that (I prefer SD as tool rather than variance but that's just my preference)...I just took a quick look at my February numbers, and my standard deviation was 0.45% Would be interesting for the OP to calculate his for the same period.

I posted something a few years ago about how to use Excel to see if the changes that you make to your pages are really having an effect or if you just think they are. A search on keyword Excel by me as a poster should probably find the set of instructions I posted. If not, and anyone cares, I can dig it up and link to it lol

    Here

And wow, I mean, WOW! 20 billion threads about various things that do and do not make a difference in CTR, and so on, and not a single comment to a thread that offers a way to quantify things. No wonder correlation without causation is oftentimes taken as the ultimate truth.

So much for the scientific method. =)
