Why I am Getting So Much Traffic From Google Image Search

Majority of my traffic is coming from Google Image Search and probably is the reason for the low CTR and CPM. Traffic from image results amount to almost 80% of the total search. I think it is not helping the site in any way. Is this the case with everybody else on the board?

You probably have an image on your site that is popular in the image search. Check your site stats and you will find which one it is.

No, most traffic comes from the search engines. With images, it usually happens by accident. So you probably haven't got a high raking, but one of your images has become popular in the image search.

The fact is that most of the images I put are becoming popular. They are gaining more popularity compared to the actual content text. Once there was an option in Google webmaster tool to enhance image search. I had opted for this one. But now when I need to unsubscribe it no longer is available. I somehow feel that the image search traffic is hurting the actual traffic to the site.

How do you think the image traffic is hurting other traffic? One visitor isn't going to affect another.

Google images most of the times suck as compared to yahoo. Yahoo will provide one of the better results when you are searching anything and with the new design of yahoo hone page it works great. i got most of the traffic on my blog through yahoo search engine.

You can use image search traffic to your advantage.

The ONLY way I can see it hurting your site would be bandwidth, come on, how much bandwidth can it really be using up?

me too.. I have a lot of image traffic.. some of my images are embedded in other forums.. that is why they are getting so popular with search engines.. yes.. the conversion is horrible... I think the images are distracting.. not converting at all but I am too afraid to cut it off... it is still organic traffic after all

I agree, even though it is image based traffic, it is still real traffic to your website and is certainly not hurting it.

On my house blueprint site I get a lot of traffic from google images because all the blueprints are saved at pictures instead of pdfs. Is this traffic really any worse? or is traffic traffic?

What is good about being found in Google images is that many webmasters and bloggers will search there for images for their current topic and many times they will give credit back to your site.
I have some of these credits from some "major" gaming blogs as I have #1 for "video game girls" and some other highly searched image phrases. You'd be amazed at how often that is searched........perves. LOL

In fact I name my images I use in my blog using keywords along with using the keywords in the alt tags just for ranking in Google images.
Getting traffic for "Halo 3", even though it is images, eventual leads to a benefit in one way or another...

All of my gaming pic galleries bring in traffic and backlinks from the Google images.
    This is one: http://www.homecomputergames.com/gamers_blog/video-game-girls

    Be happy.. ;)

Look if you think that most of your images become popular, tell me one thing.... do you have an alt tag for your images..... If no then start putting them so you will also get your site links in the search engines ;)

Traffic from image search is pretty useless, and overall it may hurt your site.
However, if the site is about photos, or its topic is similar to what is on the photo, you can benefit from this kind of search.

HomeComputerGames uses it well, and in his case the images are really helpful, but it depends.

check which pics are showed through the image search.
do you have many pics on your page or what kind of page are you using?

if you really dont want that traffic why not changing alt txt and image name...

Google had an option in the webmaster tool for enhanced image search. It no longer exist. I had opted for option. But the image traffic hardly convert. So I am planning to get rid of it somehow.

Put proper alt tags. The tags could be something your user will be searching for to find the images. Other method of optimization for the images is to give title for each images just above the image in bold letters (I read this somewhere and found this effective). Again this could be something that are commonly searched for.
