My blog bandwidth usage is approx 20-25 GB according to the records i found with my current hosting provider cpanel. I have a limit of 50GB BW usage in my package but they say to upgrade because my site is using too much resources and advice me to shift to VPS. I want to ask that is VPS really needed. Is there anything else other than bandwidth which might be causing trouble on shared hosting. I have nearly 3000 Unique visitors and 26000 pageviews approx per day. Please give me sincere advice what should i do. Thanks in advance.
You could ask them to explain what resources it is using too many of. Chances are it will be one of the following given the amount of page views per day - remember, chances are most of these page views will probably occur during an 8-10 hour period during the day. 1. CPU 2. Database connections 3. Database CPU If database and web site are on the same server, then probably the CPU usage. Less likely... 4. RAM usage 5. Disk IO Your bandwidth usage isn't bad, but that is a lot of pages to process as everything in your blog will have to be extracted from the databse. You could possibly cut down the CPU resources with better coding and more efficient database access and data extraction since most traffic will be read-only, but if it's a commercial/free product then there isn't much you can do with the programme. Upgrading may be the only option.
CPU or memory usage might depend on the web application which is used. Can you please tell more about that? Can you ask them about those limits?
It seems he is having problems with CPU and memory usage only. He is using 50% of his bandwidth limit otherwise he is being asked to move to VPS.
did u do analysis ur site traffic is the site traffic increasing compared to previous days if yes then u should definately increase the bandwidth maybe one day ull get problems due to high bandwidth! myabe ur webhosting provider has some premium features
which language do u use in ur site not sure about this i hear some scripts and widgets eats a lot of bandwith
are you running a blog that had lots of traffic on each day and using plugins that uses lot of cache too? This will cause high cpu and memory usage on your account
It is more then likely that they asked you to move to a VPS due to high CPU consumption (probably even RAM..) This could be due to the scripts used in your site etc. If i was in your shoes, id do a backup (via cpanel) download it to your pc. Search for a good VPS provider and migrate to that. You do not want to get to the point where your current host just pulls the plug and not give you back your money nor your data... regards, Ryan
Ryan that is good scenario. But during the period of time you will be searching for web hosting your web site might experience downtime or be changed. In this case your backup might appear as old.
