I want to start using the self-host version of Wordpress. Can anyone tell me how good it is and how friendly it is?
It is user friendly- I daresay over 75% of people with blogs in this forum use Wordpress for their site. There are plenty of themes available- both free and paid. Lots of plugins available too- you can pretty much do anything with the software if you have them. If you're not a coder and still want to have a professional looking website, Wordpress is probably what you're looking for.
thanks. I'm still new at design and very new with coding but I have a lot that I want to put on my wp blog that I just can't do with the .com
wp.com is quite restrictive for bloggers, especially if you want to make money. More suited to the purists, but the quality of stuff you find there is excellent.
Hosting a wordpress blog on a domain makes it look like a real site that can grow to an authority site. With little tweaking and the right theme and plugins, you can make it look like a normal site with the power of the blog. The ability to upload files to your domain gives you lot of possibilities like having you own products in subfolder or as subdomains and so on. Don't be afraid to learn, there are lot of free tutorials online as well as paid, just go youtube and you find lot of tutorials on how to install wp, how to ftp and how to change the dns... Good luck
Yah I realized that after a day...I wanted to put in some translation and a footer plug-in I will need to switch over in a few days...I do like the theme I have though would I be able to keep that? You can check it out and let me know what you think...netinvestors.wordpress.com @azyrex I noticed the tutorials (here I go again) but I know it will be worth it. At first I was kind of but off by the blog/website thing but I'm starting to think it's kinda cool.
Hi Minty, As far as I know any theme you use on the .com you can use on your hosted site. If you know the name of your theme look for it on wordpress.org - if you find it you can use it. Regarding self hosting, the first thing to do is look for the right hosting plan, take a look at my site on how to choose a hosting plan (beeablogger.com), I think it will help you get started. If you have used wordpress.com then go for self hosting as it has more choices with theme and plugins, only you should be familiar with MySQL and little PHP.
Best move I made grabbing my own VPS and installing Wordpress. Full control and no calls to hosting support anymore - do it all myself.
