The user must click once on the link and then again on an ad. Having to click twice is one reason link units don't do as well as ad units. Another reason is the ads are not the same high-paying ads as in ad units. Another is that link units are small and hard to notice. Another is that you can only have one of them. Other than these reasons, link units are great.

Well think about it: if image ads perform well, why would Adsense start a whole new company focusing on text ads? ;)

I have never done too well with link ads. However image ads and test ads do very well for me. Bottom line is that I would use what is best for your site.

Yes. You can only select "image ads" if you want. It's set to text and images on default.

Well, once again, if banners (aka "picture ads") were still the way to go, then Adsense wouldn't have made billions upon billions going the exact opposite (aka "text ad").

Text ads as well can often be blended better in a way that actually interests the user. Many times people will 'gloss over' the image ads because they are obviously, well, 'ads'.

Text ads tend to do better in general (based on comments seen here and my own experience). People just have 'banner blindness' these days and don't even look at the images, never mind clicking on them.

The only problem that I see with link ads is that big bold "ads by google" that show with link units.
