Hi Guys, I recently purchased a server from OVH - A windows 2008 datacenter edition server. The server is all great and it costs me over $250. I intended to sell RDPs with this server but now I find out, only two users can be logged in at once. Some ppl leave their RDPs on so what do I do now? This server was intended for RDPs. Is there a way to allow more connections? Someone suggested me vnc and one guy said use vmware. Both are sucky solutions. Some guy sells RDPs too, he got a way to it. He doesn't wanna tell me cause I am his "competitor", we both sell at same places. So what is way around this. I can't afford to lose $250.
Virtualization software? Wouldn't that be as good as selling VPS? I want it to be RDPs so that people can share resources. I plan to host about 8-10 RDPs.
Yeah I don't wanna do that because then it won't be shared resources. Since I got 8gb ram, I would be giving each user 1gb ram. Some users won't be online all the time so I wanted to share resources between people. Someone gave me a bat file to run for multiple sessions, didn't solve any probs.
The Microsoft standard Windows Server license only comes with 2 simultaneus slots for RDP. If you want more you have to purchase the full MS Server license, which is quite expensive. This is done by purpose from MS so that corporations wouldn't setup one server and then run Windows from those. It is still cheaper today to have a license on each workstation. As for your problem of losing $250, I assume you'll just loose more if you continue to hang on to a solution which doesn't work. As long as you don't plan on forking up for the full license, you're smoked.
Alright so should I just sell VPS wid RDP on them? I got a standard license with multiple activation, so can I use this license of all my VPS?
IPs has nothing to do with it, well except for the obvious reason that you need one to be connected to the Internet. RDP is all about a license issue in Windows Server. It's built that way so that most users, serveradmins, who just needs to be able to login remotely themselves can do so. But you can not populate the server with a lot of RDPs as long as you just have the standard edition. For a hefty fee, they will gladly upgrade you and thus allow for more RDP connections.
Find a host with an SPLA from Microsoft - which they should be using if they are supplying Windows hosting. The specific licence you need is "6WG-00002" which called something along the lines "WinRmtDsktpSrvcs" and costs around $3.50 per month per licence. Then you can install as many as you want to install. After a while it will be cheaper to go for a Processor licence. That how we sell them through our SPLA to customers who need multiple remote desktops connections to a server and it's how MS need them to be licenced. You should be able to get them from the person who provided your OS licences - if they are using Windows legally that is. They will need to install Terminal Services Licensing server on the server to do this but there is no costs to that if you are using the individual connection licences. They should be able to get a TS licensing serial from their SPLA provider.
Ron Brown, I got my MS license from MSDN. About my host, he doesn't sell that license but is it possible to get it from you, I could pay ya more if you could sell me that license I really need it
You need to be sure that your use of the licence is within the terms of the agreement. The licence I quoted is on all SPLA price lists and if they have an SPLA they should be able to provide them to you. Their problem may be that you are using a licence that belongs to you. We couldn't sell you the RDP licences either unless you were paying for the operating system licence from us at the same time. Datacenter licences would cost, depending upon their use, approximately... $75 per CPU per month if non-outsourced, or $270 per CPU per month if outsourced (you'll need to check out Microsoft for an explanation of outsourced/non-outsourced) with these prices doubling from Jan 2011 Your other option may be the datacentre itself who may also have an SPLA and might be able to help you. What you want to do can be done, but the issue revolves around licensing and finding someone who can help you, which only comes down to your choice of host or datacentre.
I do not need the Datacenter edition, just the web edition. It's more for personal use just a few of my friends.
Before buy, learn about what you are buyng. RDPs are just 2-3 allowed at the same time. And if you want more you need to pay more more.. So my solution is ask a refound of your Windows License on OVH and use install the OEM of OVH Ubuntu Desktop, you will be able to open unlimited remote desktop connections. If you want last version of ubuntu install the 9.10, install gnome or kde, install NX Free. I can assist you for 25€ if you don't want to do yourself If you ask a full refound of full server to OVH i can provide a RPS for 20€ month without setupfee with remote desktop ubuntu, with unlimited sessions at the same time. Thanks
Ubuntu is very esey too and much better of security becouse don't have any virus.. With Wine you can run windows app with emulation. Think well about this, is your cheap way
