How much does URL affect SE ranking

It has been years since I last built a website and it seems that everything has changed. It has become very apparent that it is no longer simply Meta tags and decent keywords. I have put up a new site but doing terrible in SE ranking no matter what I do. So now I am wondering, how much of a role does your URL play in search engine rankings?

My site, aneurysmsupport comes in on the first page #4 when Aneurysm Support is searched. Unfortunately, for the best search terms Aneurysm and Aneurysms it does not appear in the first 10 pages.

I have some back links, facebook, myspace, craigslist ads every couple weeks and I even put up a very simple site on a free server just to provide another link. Also got some similar .info addresses and have one up linking back to the site and plan a couple more, and have also loaded my text with search terms.

Could it be that with my url I am just not gonna rank that well, if at all, on the decent terms? Any suggestions? Thanks

If you are ranking well for keywords such as Aneurysm Support then that's great and is due mainly from your URL choice and your page content.

Now, having said that, ranking for only "Aneurysm" will be very challenging as you are in a more competitive market with sites that have huge budgets. Joining the ranks is not impossible but will take time and hard work.

Start getting dofollow backlinks from related high PR websites, submit to directories, press releases etc.

Good luck however you have already done well.

Thanks, I am working on it and will continue. I do have another Aneurysm related .com and a couple .info's that I plan to put up and link to aneurysm support. Would it be better to put them on different servers?

I can write a press release but any suggestions on where to submit it?

    Thanks again

Yes, have them on different servers. I would continue to optimize your Aneurysm Support keywords as you will control that term in all search engines. Funny thing is, you will move up for the one keyword "Aneurysm" automatically just by focusing on the "Support" word.

"Aneurysm" is apart of "Aneurysm Support" so if you are receiving tons of visitors who type in "Aneurysm Support" and they find your site very helpful, your PageRank will increase which means Google trusts your site. A well trusted site by Google will have the power to rank better for more competitive keywords. Your page can show up for anyone typing in "Aneurysm" as your content will be relevant.

    Thanks,

Ok, got ya and that makes sense Thanks. The problem is few seem to be searching with the term Aneurysm Support. Regardless of the term, this is not something that thousands and thousands of people will search daily, but I do want to optimize the site to get as many as I can of those that do. Right now, I get few hits from SE. Most are coming from Facebook, Caigslist, and some yahoo groups.

    Thanks Again

Some good news and some bad in checking my ranking tonight. The good, using the term "ruptured brain aneurysms" on yahoo the site comes in on the first page, last position. Using the same term on Google and it is on page 7. Search "ruptured brain aneurysm" and it drops to 9. When searching google with the term "Aneurysm" it is not listed on any of the 48 pages. Its driving me crazy lol
