Why do we webmasters give out our secrets?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by Cyrus255, Sep 2, 2006.

    Seeing how digitalpoint is visited by thousands of webmasters daily, and I run across all the most precious secrets being poured out from digitalpoint's loins, I ask.

    "Why do we webmasters give out our secrets?"

    I wish to seriously understand the motive.

    Because, let's say you know a trick that gains you points on a search engine. If you tell everyone, then everyone has gained just as much as you did, then it is no longer a secret and therefore nobody will benefit from it anymore.

    Kind of like the incredibles, if everybody is super, then nobody is.

    I for one learned 98% of my SEO from forums.... so sharing is just a way of paying it back.

    Some webmaster reveal their secrets after 6 months, when they are almost useless. Others reveal the secrets hoping to find other's secrets in exchange.

    Knowledge isn't power. Knowledge sharing is power.

    Besides, for the thousands of webmasters who use the DP forums, there are thousands who don't. Also if you had an absolute golden nugget of information I'm sure you wouldn't share it on DP before you'd used it yourself and made your money.

    It is a natural, altruistic side of the human psyche. As much as you might like to believe that you are scrapping to make it to the top of the heap, and everyone else be damned, nature wants the whole species to prosper. So it made it so people want to help those they can. Adults help kids. Famous actors support small local theaters. And those who figure out a path to some success, professionally or personally, have a tugging need to share it so all can benefit. Those who hoard it end up miserable and lonely, and I wouldn't want to ever be anything like them.

    Nature is smart; it uses altruism, bragging, notoriety, etc! Anything to aid the people.

    So work on it, figure stuff out, benefit personally, and pass it on to the next generation coming up.

    I kind of feel like most here are the hardworking people with small businesses that deserve to thrive, but they are up against this large monster who continually keeps crushing them. So, it is a support group or sorts :)

    First of all there are no secrets, It may appear as a secret to a newcomer. Most of the webmaster share a tip whenever they experiance anything unusual. Sharing tips leads to popularity and one learns so many things via exchange.

    So dude in this cyber world there are no secrets as such.

    The secrets, which are actually just new ideas or techniques, are often discovered by having discussions and testing stuff with others in forums like DP.

    With over 160,000 people logging on for the first time every day, I think the internet is big enough for all of us, so why not help out those who dare to venture in the new frontier?

    Because sometimes it's us (webmasters) against them (Search Engines, hackers, blackhats, scrapers, etc), and it helps to band together and share knowledge.

    I agree with most of the above: if you share your secrets you:

    - look and act like a pro;
    - giving back to people you have learned from yourself ensures a steady flow of knowledge;

    Next to the two above, one of the more important things to me is that explaining what you know to others increases your own knowledge of things as well... After all, being able to explain something well is the highest level of knowledge you can have of anything.
