I'm having hard time designing now because IE8 compatibility mode (IE7/6 simulation) behaves different comparing to IE8 itself and Firefox/Opera/Chrome/Safari.....

So, I'd like to know are there or here people using older IE than version 8, and why ? :)

I would never be caught using any version of IE for anything other than debugging.

I do use IE8... besides IE6, IE5.5. Mozilla-based browsers and others due to web designing needs.

Multiple HD partitons with multiple OS to test.

I use internet explorer 6 and Firefox. I have read some reviews that say ie 8 is a resource hog, taking something like 300+ megs of memory. Which is more then windows XP uses.

Because of those reviews, I decided not to install ie 8.

If you are going to use IE you should use the newest version or you could run in to compatibility issues. No matter what browser you use you should use the newest.

I use IE8 but tend to stick with Firefox, only really use IE for debugging. I just started IE8 to test the memory usage as stated above but only see it using 20-30Mb, but maybe with prolonged browsing or after having visited a few sites that number might rise, not sure!

    More info on resource usage:
Then we loaded up a collection of ten different websites - blogs, news sites, YouTube, Google Mail and so on - and measured each browser's memory footprint. The results were:

    Memory Footprint (ten tabs)
    Firefox 3.1 - 91MB
    IE8 - 230MB
    Chrome - 141MB

With a single open tab IE was once again the hungriest, but this time we found Chrome's footprint to be positively titchy, with little difference between Firefox and IE.

    Memory Footprint (single tab)
    Firefox 3.1 - 50MB
    IE8 - 59MB
    Chrome - 22MB

Firefox FTW! I guess this would make sense, I figured Chrome would do a little better than that but not horribly bad. Either way, what's 230Mb of RAM here and there!

Regardless of who made it, I do not like running crapware on my computer. I dont care if it is the "latest and greatest" - bloatware is still bloatware.

With a single tab open, that is not too bad. But like most people, I run my browser with maybe at least 5 tabs open, maybe sometimes closer to 20.

That 230 megs is close to what I heard about IE 8, and why a lot of people are not using it. When the first reports came out, the testers said ie 8 used as much memory as windows xp. Which did not sit well with a lot of people.

To be honest, I do not understand why a browser takes so much memory to start with. if a web page is 100kb, the browser should be more like 1 meg, not 10, not 20 and sure not 50 megs. When a browser takes something like 1,000X the resources to display a webpage, then the webpage is big, something is wrong.

seems many are still using IE7 and even lower.. Because I'm a web designer/coder then I have to use firefox because of plugins you can install which makes life lot easier :)

e.g. measureIt , colorzilla, wheathercast, email notifier, etc etc...

IE7/6/5.5 is a nightmare for designers
