I have never had a sitemap and have suffered no ill effects.

I don't really need one. All links on the main pages go to all
my pages. Unless you have one hidden, you really don't need a
site map. If it is hidden, google may need a sitemap to find it.
But I have always thought that if it is on the web, and is worth
    finding, google will find it.

Remember there are 2 types of sitemaps. One xml specifically for
google, and then a general site map on your page for visitors.
They could be the same if you wish.

I really don't feel the need for any as far as my sites are concerned
as stated above. Visitors and google can readily find all pages.

Google does not need a sitemap to find the structure of my sites.
All have the same links on the sidebar on each page. All pages are
in those links. In effect, my sidebar is my sitemap. Now if you have
links all over the place, mixed and matched here and there, a sitemap
may be worth it. But if all links can be somehow followed from the
main page, then google will find them. Your visitors may need one,
however, and I think google tells people to have one just for this
    purpose.

    Hello Mr. Stephen,

thank you very much for your response. I also think that its not a necessary thing to build a sitemap. Of course its just for letting the bots know about the site. But i think if the site is having good/reachable links there will not be a need of sitemap arising ever.

    Thanks.

Nothing will happen :), if you want to improve your site and let your amount of indexed pages grow you should make one.

I think sitemap submission to major search engine is too helpful for search engine spider to crawl each and every page of the website easily.

There are two types of sitemap page. First simple site map page for easy navigation for visitor or customer and sitemap.xml is for search engine.

Depending upon the size, scope, and architecture of your site... some links may not be indexed properly. Typically, the major search engines can do their thing without needing the site map but it's common practice (and encouraged) to include one.

I find them useful alongside webmaster tools and analytics as it allows you to see how each link is performing,

Search engines generally have a target for how many pages they will visit from each site, based on how popular the site is. If the site gets more hits from search results, then the search engine will want to include that site more often and include more pages from the site. If your site is very deeply nested, its possible that some pages "far away" from the initial page that the search engines visit (not necessarily your home page ...) will not be visited.

A site map is a way for you to tell the search engine which pages you consider "important". It also allows the search engines to visit those pages directly, because they do not have to discover those pages by following links.
