My site has about 50 backlinks If I bought one of those 10,000 signature links... could Google penalize me? Do they help? Or are they just junk?
I guess they will help a little, but nothing special. However, it is not worth to pay for it. Do not pay for links you can make without problems.
They won't penalize but they're worth very little. They're devalued as google can detect forums not, on popular forums like dp and sitepoint it shows stats specific to the forum. So you can make the leap that if they know what forum script a site is using, they can probably detect links in a signature.
..but in the end, a link is a link. The goal is to make more as possible backlinks, so if you can get them, there is no reason to miss the opportunity.
IMHO, buying 10k links could hurt if your site is fairly new or already on the borderline of being penalized. I believe that if G's analysis program determines that it was most likely the site owner who obtained them rather than a competitor you would probably be penalized at least for a short while. If your site is old and well trusted, I think the 10k links would have no effect (good or bad) at all. /*tom*/
Google is smart enough to know it's impossible to have such links in a short period of time. IMO it might hurt your site more than helping. let us know what's the deal once you find out.

Signature links can help a little, especially if you're trying to rank for a low competition term. Bulding links by forum posting is a labour-intensive method of link-building though. There are easier ways.

Signature links can really help especially in the SEO process but buying such a huge amount of links is not recommended, you must made your backlinks in a more natural way because Google may penalized you if you have 10000 backlinks immediately.
