I have my own server I host some games on.

A server is nothing more than a computer designated to handle a lot of incoming multiple connections.

Buy either a high end computer or servers that any legitimate computer company sells (though they can run a little costly).

You can also buy the parts and put it together yourself, saving loads of $$$ in the process

My online presence in terms of sites is pretty insignificant, for me to have my own server to host them!

I personally use reseller accounts, but what you are looking for is a dedicated server. This is a server that you pay a lot of money for that is housed somewhere. Note, it is not cheap and you will have to do a lot of maintenance.

You mean dedicated? It's not a big deal, most of serious webmaster have it. You get it the same way as virtual account. The prices start at $50-$99 a month. It's more expensive than virtual hosting but it gives you much more freedom in administration of your server, more resources and security.

rather than go down the "server" route you can now just put stuff in the "cloud".

I've used Joyent which is really good. you get fixed prices which is much better than the Amazon or Microsoft clouds. I'm running a web site with a SQL backend on a single accelerator and it only cost me just shy of $200 a year.

i pay $370.00 per month for server over at softlayer then i pay $29.99 per month for PSM + $50.00 per month for backups :D so costs me $450.00 for my main server per month. For the members who say they wouldnt know what to do its very simple you pay for a server management company and they do it for you.

I have 2 dedicated servers, one for file hosting and the other for testing before a site goes live, I don't have enough bandwidth to support hosting a live site from my location.
