Yes, I suppose that would follow, if the directory gets lots of traffic you should get your share, but it depends on what your entry is about and how many people are looking for it. If no-one is interested in your site, then you still ain't gonna get traffic.

also, if your site is submitted in more quality directories, this can result in higher page rank for your site, resulting in higher SERPs, and therefore more traffic

I don't submit to directories for traffic, I do it for pagerank. I occasionally get a visitor from those smaller directories, but usually it is not someone who is looking for my site and rather a webmaster who got curious and clicked to see what my site was all about.

If you hit them all, you are likely to hit some good ones with traffic.

Traffic from a general free directory will usually be negligible.
Traffic from a niche directory is likely to be higher, in my experience.

Generally yes, many of the niche ones get search engine traffic for their individual pages.

Some people will and some people wont, i personally dont receive any from directories, even in the yahoo directory and receive none from there, but im sure that some people do ok with traffic from directories.

Its fair to say that i actually get more traffic from here than i do any of the 1500+ diectories that ive submitted to.

the traffic form all directories i am listed since many years - including yahoo dir, dmoz, google dir, zeal, etc is far less than the traffic from a single good blog post i make in an SEO way.

hence directories may be a question of getting a few quality backlinks but good SEO brings far more value than directories. IN recent times i have stopped using dirs specially since most of them have low traffic ( alexa ) and serve but the single purpose of link farming.

the only exceptions might be specialized directories such as hotscripts.com etc - highly specialized top value dirs of quality products.

Personally I have never looked up a directory to find a website. Nor have I seen any novice to intermediate person knowing about such things ever existing. It is just the webmasters like us who know that the directories exist and it is we who click other people site to find what it is all about !!
I would definite go and submit to directories because search engines give more weight to DMOZ and Yahoo. Google directory if you would have looked gets all its data from DMOZ.

Of course, most of the traffic comes from search engines. But if your business finds some niche directories, it will get some small amount of traffic from there too.

Some of the categories in my directory get quite a bit of traffic (good traffic, too) for the sites listed, while others don't get that many. If you have a niche directory, it will be easier to get optimized and have targeted traffic for more categories.

One way you can seek out directories that *might* benefit you most, is to do a search like:

    "my keyword(s)" directory

in google/yahoo/msn, to see which directories are closely related to your site come up on page one. I've found some gems doing this that have given me some marginal traffic. These are especially useful for new sites during the "sandbox" period where you can get your site in front of others via directories that rank well for your keyword(s).

GTech gives some good advice. My preferred searches are:

    "keyphrase" add url
    "keyphrase" add link
    "keyphrase" suggest site

etc. when looking for directories. And the best directories for traffic and relevancy (serps) are those in your niche... though sometimes these can be hard to find. For the most part, no directory is going to give you traffic directory, although indirectly they should all help to a small degree with search engine referrals.
