Should I hire an SEO or optimize my website myself?

    Hello.
I really want to get some good rankings for my site but I don't have a lot of money. Can I realistically expect to get some decent rankings without hiring a professional SEO to do it for me?

The answer is it depends. If you don't have a good understanding of SEO then its probably best paying someone who does (and i don't mean anyone who calls themselves a SEO expert). However, if you are on a limited budget, then learning it yourself maybe the only option, but it will be a longer process.

The only problem with SEO is it is not something that you can pick up then drop and still expect your site to stay where it is.

Hiring an SEO for a month is ok but as soon as they stop then so will your positions.

I do all my SEO myself mainly because I can not afford an SEO expert but also because it is an ongoing thing.

Correction - I have paid someone to submit my directories for me in the past because I hate directory submission with a passion, but that it is.

I also like the excitement, being able to see if what I am doing is working. Kinda of an addiction I suppose.

I truly agree with Natali57. SEO is an ongoing process and if you stop on this, your website rank will fall. You can use onetime services like directory submission but other than this like social bookmarking, article submission, press releases etc are ongoing to keep the places.

    Do it yourself:
+ You can save your money
+ You can do this the way you want
+ You CAN get some decent rankings if you know what to do
+ Oh, yes. That's kind of fun too, as above posters mentioned :)
    - You need to know what to do, that is: you need to constantly learn SEO
    - Since you need to learn SEO, you have to spend time for that
    - You must also spend time for a SEO work itself
    - The results might not be too astonishing. Depends on your qualification.

    Hire a SEO:
+ You might get very good results
+ You can save your time, as you don't have to learn or apply SEO-methods yourself
    - You have to pay this guy. Moreover, you have to pay constantly (see the above comments)
    - You still have to control the SEO-guy yourself, unless you're 100% sure in him
    - No SEO can guarantee anything. If he does - fire him immediately, he's liar.

Seo optimization is a time consuming and longer process. If you have a spare time and right skills, then why not?? go ahead and do it yourself. But if you don't have time, then simply outsource it to someone else. Best of LuCk!!

SEO is in itself,is very long process to get good results. Even if you hire a SEO, it will take considerable amount of time. So, it would be better to appoint an SEO to get result faster...If you can afford that results can be delayed then go on your own..

I would recommend a good SEO company, cause they know all the Pros and Cons, they would get you up to speed within a short period of time, wherein you can concentrate on your other deliverable's. Yes Cost is a big concern, good company's they rip you apart.

My other suggestion is to try company's which work on a SEO Performance model, wherein you only pay them only if results are shown in the Google Search Results. This way you dont spend on SEO initially but only when it performs - this makes absolute sense. There are not many companies willing to rake this risk thou. One company that i came across working on this model is resultfirst.com, I would say worth a look.:)

i suggest you do it on your own. there ae too many times i've read hassles about hiring someone and in the end their sites were not optimize properly and worst is they get banned in google because the SEO guru he hired uses blackhat.

    do it yourself.

Its better to try and do it yourself, it will not cost you anything but your time, when you have reach a point were you are getting enough traffic to your site and making sales, you can then outsource the work.

I would do it, if your SEO skills aren't the greatest in the world. However, I would suggest hiring somebody that can give you some legit references, and do your homework first. You don't want the person you hire to use Blackhat SEO methods. Good luck :)

I would say it depends on your competition. If you are only up against pr1 or pr2 pages, then you could learn seo and compete. If your competitors are pr3 or pr4 then - you COULD compete - but it will be a lot harder.

Whichever, some article writing - with a mix of good anchor text - won't hurt your site.

Sorry but this is just not always so.

I have sites thta have remained on page 1 in position 1 for competitive keyword phraes (in the millions) without doing anything further on specific pages for over 2 years and also without doing any linking whatsoever.

Obviously, if you want to see your site with high rankings in a short time, then you have to hire SEO experts. Other wise wait for some time and do yourself.

I always recommend people do it themselves until they have a good understanding of what and how to do it. The problem a lot of people run into is that they don't know anything about it and usually overpay for sub-par service.

Learn it in and out first and what it entails then when you are busy with other more important things you can outsource it with the knowledge of what needs to be done.
