I've been looking into this lots. I think the key is create good quality content and then create good quality oe way backlinks to this content.

Make sure you do proper market and keyword research if you do want to get to the top of Google. You can have great content and be consistent with your backlink campaigns but it wouldn't do you any good if the market you're in is highly competitive.
