Google Too Optimistic About Monthly Search Volume

    Hi guys,

Don't you think that sometimes Google is too optimistic about the estimated monthly search volume? I've just realized I've shot the wrong rabbit :D

Some time ago I researched one certain field of electronics and found a short phrase that was estimated 6,600 searches per month. Built the site and you know what - I am dominating the niche almost completely. I am #1 on Yahoo, on Bing I am both #1 and #2 and I am #2 on Google.

This is really funny. There are thousands of companies making the "components" I am writing about. They have old, established websites and then I eased past them within 5 - 6 months... to find that nobody visits my site

Yeah, that's right. All the traffic I get comes directly or via links... I only get one or two search engine visits per day. Where are my 6,600 visitors? I've only had 17 visitors from Google last month?

No, I'm not complaining - I'm selling some stuff but not thanks to search engines, anyway.

Have you had similar experience and how do you determine when Google is lying and when it is not?

    Same thing here.

    #1 Google
    #1 Yahoo
    #3 Bing

    total monthly searches 880
    I get maybe 1,at the best 2/day
Statistics show that if you are #1 in Google only the probability would be 42% clicks and that would=369
I would expect and be happy with 150-200/month

Ones someone suggested to look at Google insights for search not at Google keyword external to see what the traffic shows there, because the Google keyword external refers to Nr of bids and is related to Ad sense.
Anyway I find this very confusing too ,so if someone would be kind enough to answer It would be much appreciated.
    For sure someone here knows.
Thanks for posting this tread and thanks in advance for helpful answers.

estimated no of queries doesnt need to be from Google, it could be from partner sites. In that case you wont be pulling in those traffic unless you do adwords.

It is not the actual estimated monthly report. Also you should find the popularity of the keyword geographically. I think the keyword may not popular around the globe.

make sure that your using EXACT in your keyword search tool in google. You will notice a big difference in search volume, however with that it is still an estimate. Unless you get keywords with over 5,000 exact searches estimated by google, dont expect to get major volume for being ranked for certain keywords...however there are exceptions to this....

Thank you for all your replies.

It is interesting. According to insights my "component" is on the rise :D

When using Google's keyword tool I target only UK and USA because I want people who buy stuff! Sorry, guys, don't want to sound disrespectful! The ranking I've given is for UK. In localized USA search the Yahoo and Bing results are the same #1 whereas in Google USA I am in page 2 :( (yeah, I know, I know...)

I did, that's why I am puzzled. Ah, never mind - I'll concentrate on good quality links and hope they bring me more direct traffic.

Anybody who has money, is net savvy and has the means (Credit card, Paypal etc) to buy stuff is a potential customer.

Me too has same experience.I think google gives justice to those companies that makes many backlinks for some stuff.I have many times seen many unnecessary websites in search like if you search some software then there are rapidshare search engine results for first 2 pages of google.

They just give estimated search volume. It can vary. But it helps to find the popularity of terms.

Well the statistics you get from Google are just estimates and they can either be optimistic or pessimistic. I've had experiences with both cases. Of course the main issue that you need to factor in is that Google uses too many different datacenters and you can never know if the rank you mentioned is the same for all of them.

Yes, I had the same experience...with the same number "6600"...one of my sites is ranking for 2 such keywords with 6600 search volume but they hardly fetch any search engine visitor throughout a month:eek:

It would not surprise me if the estimator tool is way off. I mean look at WMT and you can see how that tool is hardly accurate. Another thing is if you are #2 in Google this might be something to look at. Lots of people just click the top results.

It may not be as bad as most of the people link. 50% here and there is possible.

    There might be many reasons:

    - you might be checking with "broad" match type. Check it with "exact" match type. You might see just 1500 searches per month. That comes to around 50 searches per day. First position takes around 80% of them. You, being on 2nd position, get around 10% of them. So you should get around 5 searches a day only.

    - you might be seeing the "global monthly search volume" and not "local search volume" for you country where you are checking your site's SERPs. Also, your site may not be ranking number 2 on all the local google search engines.. (check for google.co.in and google.cn)
