Press Release

Haven't done a PR as of yet - but will be doing one this weekend. Couple of questions.

If I'm selling pet supplies on my website - should I talk about pet supplies in general and not about what I'm selling? Also, I know that bloggers may do a PR sometimes if they have something really good they posted, but should I do a PR everytime we get a new product in (again, not advertising it - but somehow talk about the subject)?

It depends on why you are doing PR.

If you are doing it to gain links, then most people generally just submit anything and everything.

However, if you are doing for brand awareness and enforcement (which I will recommend), then you are best suited for looking for something interesting about pet supplies that has to do with you and not necessarily promoting yourself (except in rare cases).

Things that work well generally include, stats about your industry, something new and inventive regarding your industry, your view about something that might be going on e.t.c

The whole point of a Press Release is to raise awareness/bring attention to a new service/product/study etc

If you've got something new that needs a Press Release then talk about that item/service. Provide appropriate supporting links and possibly some quotes to back it all up.

The footnote/addendum will have your company details and can say "X is a pet supplies retailer operating out of Y for Z years..." etc

It's up to you whether you should do Press Release every time you get a new product in. There's no harm in doing a PR every time but you could run the risk of boring your audience for fairly run-of-the-mill items (plus you'll get bored of the "churn" and just how much can you actually say about certain products and be new and exciting every time when they're all "the same") so it might be wiser to save PR for big ticket items, something special (organic pet food) and the newest items.

    Hope that helps :)

You should start by reading a lot of press releases sent out by other companies. Also, google "writing press releases" for some good tips. A press release is meant to raise awareness of something that is newsworthy, i.e. the launch of a new site, a new product line, etc.

yes.. in easy word that you can have your press release all around your business.. but it should not look like over promotion.. write about your latest on going activities in business. your future prospects.. and few about your business.. thats all ...
