Hey All: I have the alexa tool installed and I keep a very close eye on my website rankings "currently at 509,539" the site is less than 3 months old , hmmm? lets say 3 months old give or take a week or two? Until now I haven't given a lot of thought as to how this tool actually comes up with this number, I have really only focused my attention on how long it takes to get to 500,000 and now that I am pretty much there Im shooting for 300,000. Ok thats enough dribble! My question is... Does anyone know how the alexa tool makes its calculations? I know it's got to do with traffic but how do all the cogs mesh to come up with a number?
I believe that it depends on the Alexa toolbar web users who happen to open your link. Also, it should depend on the number of pages indexed.
Alex rating gets calculated by Alexa toolbar. It simply tracks how many visitors from all the whole world visit individual sites. The more visitors, the better rank.
yep, it's calculated using the number of visits and page views by alexa toolbar users. not very accurate if you ask me.
Of course it's not accurate Especially if your site gets visited by smart persons who don't use that Alexa crap...
Alexa tool calculate the numbers of visitors who are visited your website.By using this calculation it given the rank.So your rank is higher then it good for ranking website.
not sure how they calculate.. all i know is that they are not accurate and their results are just are just estimate.. you know something for someone to look at what's your site stats..
From my experience, it gives rank based on page views. Also the alexa toolbar must be installed in the pc.
The Alexa rankings seem generally accurate to me. But I personally don't know anybody that has the toolbar installed so I'm not sure how they would get their data.
Alexa has no real relevance, it's calculation method is flawed and if you compare your actual traffic to alexa's rankings of your sites over say a year you'll see that the two really don't match up at all in any way shape or form. Mostly only webmasters use the alexa toolbar, so sites geared towards seo and other webmaster related topics will get visited a heck of a lot more than a site with the exact same amount of traffic geared towards say kittens. Personally I don't understand why anyone would pay any attention to it at all. People are also able to manipulate their Alexa ranking, I wont say how but have you ever wondered how a site with say a pr1 and no real content that you know isn't getting any traffic can have an alexa rank under 100,000? Who cares anyway, how does alexa have any affect on your traffic level or ability to make money with your site? Do you really think regular visitors give a flyin crap what your alexa rank is? I would say most of them have probably never even heard of it unless they're webmasters.
Very nicely said...I doubt whether even advertisers look at it while getting publishers for their banners etc. There are other effective ways to get exact UV count
It's no real evidence to how well your website is doing. It depends on the number of users with the alexa toolbar visiting your website. Which sane person uses any other toolbar other than Google?
Alexa is useles... one of my site has 200,000 with 300UV/day, but one of my site that has 500UV/day only get 1,000,000+
Alexa is kind of like the Nielsen rating of the internet. It uses a small subsection of web users that is probably inaccurate.
