My site is live since mid of October 2009 and that is also when I started building backlinks. It took Google nearly 3 months to recognize some of the backlinks but yet not all of them. Yahoo is a bit faster but I need to say, Yahoo does also recognize nofollow links and Google doesn't.
Yeah, google dont update backlinks that frequently. However with a clever google query you can check your site latest links, You can use webmasters tool. I think it updates latest links more frequently.
Could be a long time. Google seem to prioritize that kind of stuff and checking backlinks doesn't tend to be high priority.

Indeed that google update backlinks slowly and I seldom use backlinkwatch to monitor them maybe twice or trice a month.
Yeah, It takes some days but if the page where your link is placed is cashed by Google then your back links can count from the same time.
Yes same problem here. Google really dont update backlinks frequently. I also got huge backlinks but google only shows about 70% of that links.
Completely depends on crawl rate assigned to backlinking site...in case of social bookmarking sites or popular article sites like ezine, its a very short span but on other hand, a backlink from a listing page of some new web directory may take up to 2-3 months to get counted
Yes, Google is ultimate aim for everyone so they having many restrictions and requirements to include our site in them. But if they accepted then no need to worry about other sites.
If your backlinks come from good quality (good according to Google) sites then only Google lists them and better quality links take very less time to appear I have seen Google pick up links for my site in less the 4 days. Normally, it will take about 1-2 weeks to get the effect of your backlinks. However, if you can get backlinks from high traffic pages or sites, Google normally used to visit those sites very frequently. Google doesn't list every backlinks to your website, but yahoo does. That’s why you think yahoo is quicker. But I believe that Google is faster than Yahoo in indexing websites, so happened to me. If you links are listed in Yahoo, sure Google knows about them, but it may not list them. Use Social Bookmarking which all are high quality site according to Google also when you bookmark your website with Social Bookmarking site you will find most of them are authority site also so you will get very quick back link.
