Your MUST have a landing page coz that contributes to your quality score.

    Let's clear things up.

You CAN send your clicks directly to any affiliate merchant's page (you put your hoplink in the destination URL portion of your ad). You can also send it to your own page which redirects to that page. You must however use that page's URL as your display URL. The display URL must be the one where the user ends up after all redirects.

Creating your own landing page where you place your affiliate links is discouraged. The landing page portion will be set to poor and the QS set to one effectively preventing any ad servings. Repeated offenses will get your account banned. See the guidelines at adwords.google.com/support/aw/bin/static.py?page=guidelines.cs

What many here call a landing page is your own page. Google's and other search engines' definition is the page one lands on when clicking on an ad. ANY page on the Internet can be a landing page. So saying that you must have a landing page is an oxymoron.

The vast portion of the QS is the click rate, most of the rest is keyword relevancy. Assuming you will not choose "dog food" keywords to promote a page about bird seed, the keyword relevancy will be good and all you have to do is increase your CTR to increase the QS.
