Is a permanent IP Address a good Idea?

Yes, I am a Newbie. It never occured to me that my IP address changed (you learn something new everyday :) ), and so I called my service provider who said I could get a static IP address.

I am trying to get more accurate stats, I am afraid that my visits are being counted as part of my stats right now since my IP address changes every 8 minutes.

Questions: Does having a static ip address really make much of a difference? Is anyone using a static IP? If so tell me your opinon please.

    Thanks you.

your IP changes every 8 minutes? That seems a bit much but anyways, a static IP address is only good if you want to run a server (webserver, FTP server, ...). If its your website stats you'r worried about maybe you could connect thru a proxy, that way your ip address will be the proxy ip address (as seen from the site and stats)

Okay, not every eight minutes, so far I have had the same one all morning, at least for the two hours since I turned my computer on. The tech guy at my phone company told me it changed every eight minutes.
    :)

If you have some enemies who want to crash or hack your computer, then a dynamic ip would be a lot safer.

Thank you very much for your response :). I am now thinking of leaving my service as is.

And for those people like me:
Dynamic IP address: Temporary IP address assigned from a pool of available addresses by an Internet Service Provider when a customer logs on to begin an online session.

    Thanks again.

Static IPs allow you to run a server which will allow you to set up any type of site you want to offset the costs of your connection. Get yourself a router with NAT and you're fine.

It's been awhile since I had to pay for my interent connection out of pocket.
