Tool to split large graphic into pieces?

I've noticed that many websites that display large jpg or bmp graphics split the image up into smaller pieces, and then assemble them on the page using table cells. I'm assuming that this is done to speed up the loading of the page.

Some examples are the one-celebrity sites that have a large image of the person down the left or right side of the page.

Is there a popular tool that splits these images up into pieces? I have Paint Shop Pro 9, but I couldn't find where it could do this easily.

I'd appreciate any feedback on this.

    Thank you.

It's called slicing an image. Fireworks is quite good at it.

OR just use Photoshop, it also has a Slice tool. When the image is Sliced and ready to be saved. You can either save the pieces, or save it as HTML + images. Yes, Photoshop also saves you time and create an HTML page for you :) hope that helped

Almost every graphic design program has the slice tool. you can even set the fixed size for every area that you're cutting.
