There are so many Free blog Templates available online. Just make your blog look pretty and then try to promote it. You may want to search in Blogs for similar content of yours and follow them. Also request them to link back. I am sure you already know this, but just some points on the top of my head. Why do you want to waste time and money on Blogs to get listed in Dirs.
