Best way to create password protected/membership required content?

I use wordpress for www.midweekpolitics.com. In launching a commercial-free paid podcast of our show for members subscribing via paypal, I am trying to figure out the best way to administer and restrict access to that.

One option would be some system that creates usernames and passwords manually, and we can do it for each subscriber. We don't think it will be so many that this would be difficult.

Another option is just having one password for access to some pages/content and changing it monthly and emailing each active subscriber.

Can someone suggest which of these options, or another, is the best, and also what plugin/widget I might use, or how to implement this on the technical end?

Starting out doing this manually would probably be the best bet. If your host has cPanel, you can simply use their password protect directory function and add members as time goes on.

Hmm, ok that seems reasonable. I'm unsure though how password protecting a directory on the server will allow be to give/restrict access to specific wordpress pages, since those are named dynamically and are on the root, ie midweekpolitics.com/page-i-want-to-require-password-for

Can you tell me a little more about how you'd do what I'm trying to accomplish?
