I want to start an ecommerce site, but don't know where to start. I will be starting a photo website pretty soon, but I am looking to also sell cameras and other photo related items.
What are you development skills like? do you know html/php... I ask this because if you have some programming skills you could setup an open source ecommerce solution. If you lack these skills you would be best to use a hosted shopping cart solution designed for those who arn't as skilled technically.
choosing what to sell is hardest. you already done it there are many open source e-commerce solutions like oscommerce. have a designer to design a nice website for you then have a developer set it for you.

There are many ways to go about it you can pay to have the site created, pay to learn how to do it yourself, or do the research yourself on everything you need to know. What I did was payed niche blue print for there video's those video's taught me what i needed to know from choosing the right niche to how to bring traffic to my site check them out.
I've been in the photo business mate, it's not a good one. Electronics (cameras esp) is the worst business these days.
There are a few good open sources systems, but how you plan on setting up your site will depend on the type of cart you want as far as open source, I'm finding Magento to be pretty amazing in the potential and for SEO purposes- Do you plan on incorporating content with in the products? And your budget should be considered - Don't forget SSL Certificate - Do your research to make sure the cart and CMS you use will work with your ideas.
Well as the cliche goes "All you have to do is search the WWW" it can be tiring and sometimes having too many information at hand can get a bit confusing. When I started an e-commerce business I had the same question too, luckily I was able to stumble into a website that has exactly what I need. AlgoZone has a lot of pre-made template that fits whatever products you want to sell.
To get your feet wet in ecommerce, why not buy an existing ecommerce business like on DigitalPoint forum?
my personal opinion is that you can't go wrong with OSCommerce. the software itself is free, but if you don't like the default template (which most people don't) you'll have to buy one for around $49. I surfed around and found a free OSCommerce template which looked good but had nothing to do with what i'm selling so i just tweaked it a little bit and now I've turned it into a beautiful digital download store : ) oscommerce is your best bet buddy
i didn`t get your problem: wether you don`t know where to hire a good designer or what are the first steps from technical point of view. please clear this thing to me
No need to learn rocket science to start a ecommerce website, I suggest you to buy AJ Shopping cart script to start ecommerce business and customer support executives will help you to get into your ecommerce business easily. www.ajsquare.com/products/ecom/index.php
Well there are free ecommerce scripts that you can use to start off with like OSCommerce and Zen cart
As you are asking about how to set it up I will assume you have little or no knowledge of coding and thus you wont be able to set it up using an open source solution. Best bet for a custom design would be to hire a designer, they can design and develop you a unique website built into an ecommerce platform. You will then be able to update your categories and products as and when you choose using a CMS.
I own five published ecommerce websites. There are website companies that can sell you complete website templates which you do not have to know any html and you can build you a site from scatch. Shopping cart software are already built in. and some of these companies are great because of the on going phone and chat tech support.
