I don't mean to burst any bubbles, but a lot of the directories are seen as spam sites now because the quality hasn't been maintained. If you want to provide good SEO services to your clients, then I would suggest using some other method for generating links. That's no way to start them off by spamming directories, anyhow.
google cant ban you for backlinks. what happens when you build a bunch of backlinks is that google gives you a nice boost at first. this is "an artificial" increase over where you should be if it wasnt for the recent large number of links. google does this to stay on top of "hot" items or "current trends"... ie tiger woods, elections, news stories.. etc etc. they think that if a lot of links are building for 1 site than that is the site people want to go to.. then what happens if your link building calms down your "artificial boost" is taken away. you are not penalized. your a not de indexed.. so my philosophy.. build as many links as you can as fast as you can as consistently as you can. this is of course after you have a good amount of content and on page seo done. good luck
The case of Google and China is a totally different case. China imposes a lot of restriction for Google, which if they do not comply, would mean them going out of business in China. This is something that technology cannot resolve because this apparently is an issue of legality (or at least to what Chinese commies thought is legal). What I was referring to is the technology of Google to detect links that are spammy and not.
It's not the number of submissions in a brief period of time that triggers the filter, its the same title, description, etc., submitted to hundreds if not thousands of directories. Search engines can pick up on these link patterns very easily. Those that get solid results from directory submissions write unique titles and descriptions for each submission they make. A lot of work? Yes. But when you submit to 2000 free directories with only 4 or 5 submission sets, and your serps and traffic are still poor, then what? Take full advantage of the free listings by spending some time doing the job right. There are only so many places to get free listings at and when you run out of these locations you may find yourself spending more time down the road looking for free places to list at rather then "building links."
Its only for new domains, not established domains, such as your competition must be, otherwise they wouldnt have PR, be popular etc. You wouldnt get banned/sandboxed anyway, just a deferred PR update. Do your linking slowly and credibly and mix between sources, dont just do link dirs for 1 month - do a mixture link dirs, blogs etc each day. With google universal search this is going to be even more important.
I quite agree. In fact I have seen your posts in the past snowbird and I will finally give you a rep. My addition: The ultimate realistic link: 1. From a PR 4-6 page not site. 2. Anchor text with your target keyword. 3. Latent sematic indexing technique in the content.
I also Think that it will not effect you because if you submit to 1000's of web Directories in a Day..only Few of them gets Listed..& most of Good directories takes..more than a week to approve any quality submissions..so Google will get These Listing on Different time intervals & there are also several Directories which never get indexed by any of search engines..so probably..400 of them works for you. And i totaly agreed with that if any website getting too many links in short span & Got Penalized by Google than i think there are many people who can do like this For their competitors. I think You have to make those Links which are relevent to your website topic. Because Quality works better on Quantity.
really valuable advice. However what should be the pace of building links and what is the apppropiate manner of developing it over a time. Kindly suggest.
I agree with you to some extend, bloggingmix. The part about getting loads of spam links, I agree with. It isn't about the quantity of links you gain, it's about the quality. Clients need to realise this and stop thinking that mass directory submissions will actually help. However, I don't agree with your idea of Google sanctioning for building too many links in a small period of time (I think that's what you meant). Based on my personal experience, I'm building thousands of high-quality backlinks every few days or so. According to Yahoo Site Explorer, I currently have 48,762 links - And I only created this site at the end of October. I've not received any sort of penalty. Infact, Google seems to really like my site
yes pal, that is totally true and i want to give a small suggestion when you submit URL try to copy and past them typing the link as it may really make mistakes...
All these are bullsh*t You will get banned for a short period of time I got banned for 1500 directory submissions for a site of mine but after 2 months it was indexed and PR3 and ranking for some keywords
google probably has a complex system categorizing websites based on certain criteria. CNN and other big companies are well established companies, and they are probably placed in a category that is not deeply regulated by google. CNN, USATODAY, MAXIM MAGAZINE are all household names. Companies who are not in this category are probably regulated differently and subsequently scrutinized differently compared to companies like CNN. I am not an seo pro but I try to think logically. Let me know your opinions please.
Using the same anchor text all the time is another thing to avoid when link building. You'd risk your website from spamming.
Got an idea - I will create 100 BLs per day to cocacola.com and Google will deindex it. Then I will register a domain dontbuycokebuymylemonade.com and have it on Google #1 spot. Great! Got it! Imagine, how much lemonade I will sell! Definitely more than I did last week selling it over the counter at my local church charity event.
I like to rotate titles, descriptions, and submit to only the top 100-200 directories, rather than to 1000's of spammed ones. I'd written a post about directory submission tips, you might find it useful.
I am of the idea that nothing is wrong...but you should manage your time. Maybe best way is to do a little of everything. Directories, link, reciprocal, bbacklinks and so on. There is a way to check this. If anyone has a site with a large amount of forum singature backlink, like this one. Try to change your signature link to another site, which would receive in one day all the links from one site. Let the crawl pass and see wheter it pushes up or down. Anyone wants to try?
