Yes, Social book marking, networking sites are really of great help, here the profile pages do get updated in our site as back links and thus we can thus drive traffic too.
Nofollow links will not be counted by the search engines. So maybe they are good for getting traffic but it doesn't count as a backlink. For getting as many links as possible you can try the mass submitter but you won't get many high quality backlinks if you don't submit them yourself.
I use bloggingfusion.com and I received about 500 back links in a few weeks. What they do is they post your site in so many categories that it appears all over their page. My blog went from pr0 to pr1 in 3 months just by using that site alone. I also use pr.com, every press release links back at pr3 within 3 months.
