Depends on what type of website and how long its been up. You wouldn't want to put one on a brand new site or one that doesn't really benefit any one. People will only donate when they truly love or believe in what your doing.
Of course just make sure if you do this that you don't have too many advertisements and the box isn't annoying meaning it's not huge and in the readers way.

Ofcourse its ok, never heard of people being turned off by a site because it asks for donation.... Many well known site of freeware developers does it.
You can of course put one... but it will be effective and actual donations would come by.... only if you are offering something good for free, with an intention to help people! Regards, RightMan
Well Donation box would be good if site really providing good information to readers and it helping lot's of people. If you site doesn't provide good valuable information then it wouldn't be advisable to put donation box.
Itz a good idea but I dont see many legit Donation kind a things ...I find only some here and there But be sure You make the things go fine..
I used to put one In my site , I collected about $32 in a whole month from donations .. It depends on your demographics , If you have ages 18 + then go for it , If all are 18- then don't expect a donation .
