Link research gave a lot of links and Pr 0?

During one of the backlink study of my competitors I found something strange. One of the top ranked sites according to seomoz had PR 0. This seemed a bit strange so I was wondering if anyone got ideas why this is? A penalty or somethingt? The site has about 6000 links according to yahoo with 9450 links from 355 root domains according to Seomoz. The Seomoz-numbers are impressing.

The only thing I can see "wrong" regarding the site is that is just 1 year old. That shouldn't have that kind of impact though. I have tried to check the links in seomoz to that site but there seems to be a bug in the tool right now. The links to the site when I check yahoo doesn't seem to be spammy.

Any suggestions how I should continue the research? Really want to know why this is happening and if my competitor gain or looses from sites like this.

is the site still in index?
is the site still ranking well in serps?

if you answered yes on both, it's highly likely that seomoz data is wrong. check the pr via google toolbar or similiar.

Again an exemple of PR is worthless

    Don't waste time with PR

Higher PR doesn't mean higher rankings or traffic ...

This could be due to LOTS of things... maybe lots of the URLs linking to them are not indexed by Google... but more likely is that MOST of them are nofollow like blog comment spamming. They likely rank well yet have a low PR because the few followed links the page has uses the keyword phrases (or slight variations) as the link text. Make sure you're looking at inbound links ONLY for that URL, NOT the entire site.

Take the first 50 or so inbound links listed at Yahoo! and view the source for those pages. Check to see if the links have rel="nofollow" attribute... perform a site:InboundLinksURL to see if the inbound link is at Google... note the PR of each page where the links exist (NOT the PR of the "site")... note the number of outbound links on each page linking to them... Note the link text of each inbound link... Anytime you see what appears to be an anomoly like this, it can almost ALWAYS be explained if you check the stuff I mentioned in this paragraph for a fairly large sample of the URL's backlinks.

As the previous poster said, the PR of your URL carries VERY little weight in how your URL ranks for a particular keyword phrase.
