Is Twitter so effective for marketing?

I know Twitter is gaining popularity. But is it true is the best tool for marketing?

I mean does it help to promote products or websites on twitter?

Please say if you have any experience in this.

Twitter is doing great for me at least. I am getting good traffic from there whenever I tweet my articles.

But you should always be careful about using twitter for marketing. It can give your site negative reputation too if you don't use it properly.

Do read my article about How Twitter Can Kill Your Business

There is another very similar thread running here, it's quite interesting at how it can be sued. Up until recently I really thought it was only for social use but now understand it can be an excellent marketing tool.

The thread can be found in the "Social Networks" forum...I can't post links to other parts of the forum yet

It's great for traffic, but you need targeted followers. That's the key. If your followers are interested in what you're tweeting, they'll visit your website again and again. That's my experience.

It's easy to get targeted followers.

How do you go about getting targetted followers? Do you mean invite people to "follow" you on Twitter that have previously registered their details on your website?

The easiest way to do it is to follow people by keywords you find in their tweets or in their bio. For instance, if your business is SEO, you look for people tweeting about SEO or Search Engine Optimization etc...

When you follow them, they'll follow you back, at least most of them will.

There are many ways to automate this process, I'm using TweetAdder and I'm very satisfied with it.

Ah, I wasn't aware that you could search for other peoples' interests, that sounds like a fantastic feature. Would you say also that you spend a lot of time looking for new followers on the site. Sorry for all of the questions but do you find that having people follow you helps with your business? I.e, is the time worth it?

Twitter's okay, but I can honestly say the bulk follow method sucks now, far too many spammers.

I don't spend a lot of time, hardly any time at all. The software does it all. Just type in the keyword and click the button, and it finds all the people who have used the keyword in the time period you want. After that, just click another button to follow them.

It helps a lot to have many followers. Every time I tweet something and it has a link, at least 20 people clicks on it.

Oh, this tool sounds very clever indeed! Originally it sounded like a lot of work but I guess if you enter effective keywords into it then it will pull back lots of relevant results. I'll look into this a bit more

The two best software are probably TweetAdder and Hummingbird. But there are many services that you can use as well. I'm personally using TweetAdder.

Thanks Jens. So are these tools add-ons for Twitter or a seperate program that you download to your computer?

They are separate programs, they just access the Twitter API.

For marketing? No, ask4domains, it is not.

    Not even close.

You can be interesting, not try to sell, but even then, still, no.

But try it to see for yourelf.

That's the only way to know for certain.

Edited to say: No matter where you are, when you have others saying how "great" it is, have you ever noticed that they do not show their Twitter page? For good reason. They either do not have one, or they have so few followers, you have to chuckle.

Many post that just to post, to be part of a thread. They don't even know what in the hell is going on in their own backyard.

Weird, dellusional fucks out there anyway, especially on message boards.

I think its really hard to get people to follow you if all you are doing is spamming links.

You have to be interesting, this is hard in 140 characters. You might as well have a blog on facebook or myspace.

I don't really see the potential in twitter for marketing, only for unsucessful spamming.

Personally I think twitter has seen better marketing days. The people who use twitter, and I mean REALLY use twitter, automatically tune out anything that even resembles someone trying to sell them something.

If you have a twitter account you use anyway, then marketing things once and a while may convert, but starting a twitter account just for the purposes of marketing a product is a waste of time these days.
