Google announced Thursday it will donate $1 million USD to help victims of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti. It is also extending the company's technological resources to relief organizations. Internet giant Google is helping victims of the catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti, a poor nation in the Western hemisphere. On top of the financial support Google is extending to the earthquake victims, the company is also mobilizing its technological resources to help relief organizations connect and link with each other in the absence of power or electricity needed to operate the needed communications equipment. Google also created a Web page devoted to linking people with charitable groups including Direct Relief, Yele Haiti, the Red Cross, and Doctors Without Borders. Google is making online mapping and satellite imagery tools available to relief workers so they can better evaluate damage and coordinate responses. "We've also reached out to the YouTube community for help," Jacquelline Fuller and Prem Ramaswami of the Google Crisis Response Team said in a blog post. Due to the massive extent of devastation in the capital city, Haiti is left without power to run its public facilities and infrastructure, making it very difficult to deliver the kind of relief and services survivors need. source : DigitalJournal.com
That's great news, now only if Google could find a way to "get the relief there". I saw on the news that all the supplies haven't been distributed yet (hopefully today) because of impassable roads and harbor. Why can't they just drop supllies out of the sky like the military has done in times of war??? I know they are worried about "riots", but this will happen sooner with no aid. People will do anything without water and food.
I was in the military with some guys who served in Africa in the 90's. They had nothing good to say about relief efforts that are 'indiscriminate', such as food dropped from the sky. First of all, they create absolute chaos and turn relatively calm areas into areas of frenetic activity. Secondly, when all is said and done, the distribution is never fair or even... in fact, food can be confiscated and sold or exchanged for services by local toughs. When people are hungry enough to kill for food, then a food drop will cause deaths that could have been prevented. Relief efforts, if they are to 'do the greatest good for the greatest number,' have to be carefully planned and implemented, and carried out in an orderly fashion.
for google, thats pocket change. we would expect such contribution from big corporations but google could have donated more. however, better than nothing.
I'm not impressed, a little disappointed even... Google donating $1 million is like me donating a nickel from my coin jar... They need to up the donation a bit. Good luck to all in Haiti and its supporters.
The fact is, every little bit counts. Google is also linking to a donation page from their home page. This is bound to generate a lot of money. I would've been disappointed if Google didn't donate, not how much they did donate.
exactly, i also think 1 million is not enough, this is more of a publicity and advertising stunt, than real care and understanding for the victims, they should give 10 millions at least.
well, google donated 2 million on christmas for the poor people.. now 1$ ..it's not much for them, but still,it is something.i'm glad they done it
Lol they were giving our pretty much free nexus ones and now they're giving 1 million dollars . Google is one media whore.
I don't see anything wrong with $1 million. It's a nice even number for them and it's generous no matter who it is. Additionally, it's $1 million more than $0. Anything will help.
I think a million is a good size donation. Its the accumulation of all the donations that will make a difference. Based on a recent population report, if everyone in the US gave a penny that would be a total donation of $3,040,597.24
did yahoo donate $1m? No they didn't. But still $1m is not a lot but other companies don't even donate anything!
Tiger Wood donating $3 mil Sandra Bullock $1 mil Google $1 mil Still donating is all good no matter how much or what's being donated..
