Hello people, I currently have dofollow links setted up on my dir. What (if) would be an advantage if i'd set it up nofollow? Does these affect directories in bad way where links are set up dofollow? Please advice Thank you!
All links as nofollow will probably look odd to the search engines, might lead to problems, and kind of goes against one of the main reasons that people submit to a directory.
Thanks for your replies and suggestions, friends. Yes i think i can understand clearly an advantage for webmasters now, who sublit links to directories, and i do not mind to keep it do-follow at all, i just would like to know what would be the difference for my dir if i'd have nofollow links - would i get better rankings in google or...?? I believe not in all cases SEO is the main point, my dir is niche related and people expecting (and getting) direct traffic from my dir. And i think (targeted visitors) is bigger benefit they get, rather than one extra link for seo.
Even with it being niche, its unlikely that your directory will be able to send significant traffic to their sites, if your submitters submit for traffic then they will mostly likely be disappointed. I doubt that you could even pull in enough traffic to be able to send enough back out to the listed sites.
Not significant, but i believe they get more (not all of them of course), than one backlink (as seo) in one directory can do. By the way: not everyone is going crazy about backlinks, some just want their sites to be listed nicely in order for others to find. (If this diectoy is reputable, of course, im not saying at all mine is (or will be) the one, i just talking in general) In phpld admin can change whenever he wants links to be dofollow or nofollow. You can edit each one separately. To be honest i can not explain you clearly, Fastreplies, Im still would like to know myself - how it can affect directory by having links on it nofollow (from seo point) Im still expecting someone will answer this
I would say that most really are going crazy for backlinks, its nice if a link can be found from a directory by a visitor and they find a great site that they like, but i personally feel its the combination of backlinks that if it does help some sites rank then its the search engines where a visitor is going to find your site. Mostly webmasters use most of the directories.
IMHO, FWIW, no-follow means not entirely trusted, not something I would truly endorse or I've been paid to put this here (Google's idea, not necessarily mine). In a niche directory, one would presume that you are reviewing the sites and only accepting those worthwhile and useful within that niche. If they were worthwhile linking to in the first place then why would you even think about making them no-follow? It's my understanding that Google's push for no-follow is to avoid "selling" PR which it would seem would not be the case if you were linking to truly worthwhile and related sites in the first place whether they pay to be there or not. Making links no-follow simply to not share your own page rank is short-sighted and probably self-defeating. Furthermore, if you are so worried about draining the rank of your page by linking to others, how can you then expect anyone give your site do-follow links to get that PR in the first place?
No one would like to submit his site in No Follow directory until and unless your directory gets high traffic !
YMC If that was addressed to me, then: In my posts you wont find that i do not want to keep it 'follow' but want to do it 'nofollow'. That only means that i personally not know what that means exactly and how it can affect directory. But yes, i woudn't like share my PR with certain website, if, because of this website, my own rankings will go down. So I was curious how it would effect directory (from seo point) (thanks, by the way, for explanation about no-follow meaning) btw: Im quite generous to a websites/listings on my dir in various ways. I spend much more than i get.
Any student of HTML Code will tell you that there are 2 types of Meta Tags: FOLLOW and NO-FOLLOW There never been DO-FOLLOW Tag and never will be and that is all you need to remember next time you're talking about HTML Code Even thou @YMC mentioned do-follow for some reason, still that explanation is very good place to start learn thing or two about purpose of those Meta Tags. fastreplies
I simply used the phrase "do-follow" to differentiate the meaning and to follow the terminology used by the OP. While in the coding side of it there is no "do-follow" it does tend to make the conversation between the two more clear.
we have a niche directory where we exclusively use nofollow for non-paid or free types of listings. we give dofollow links only to people who purchase paid listings. since its highly authorative directory and ranks well we do not wanna give nofollow links to un-trusted or free listings.
I'm currently implementing a nofollow on Admin submitted sites, yesfollow still continues for user submitted. Which means anything I personally add in my directory will be a nofollow, while user submitted will always have the follow attribute.
