Link Building Mistake

I often come across clients who wants to have their links submitted to directories overnight. They want to accumulate as much link as possible in the shortest span of time. And of course, we can always do that. But because we want to protect the interest of our clients, we always suggest that the best way to build link is to build it gradually overtime. Why? Because Google might treat your links as spam, especially when it's accumulated over a short period of time. Instead of helping your site, you end up being sanctioned.

How many links per month does make Google to consider as spam? Or to rewrite the question, what is the ideal number/way of link building?

Yep, I totally agree with you. If you submit a website to say 1000 directories in 1-2 days than there is a chance of getting banned in Google. So that will be preferable to build the links and do the promotions over some amount of time.

This is elementary, however I use 10 BL's per day for the first 2 or 3 days and than move on to another website.
In my experience Google will deindex a site if it gets over 100 bl's per day.

There are thousands of variables in the Google algorythm. I have seen new domains get completley deindexed if the number of pages grow too rapidly aswell.

Do you know that for sure, or are you just guessing. I think
alot of us guess on what google does, some truth, some myth.

The truth is... NO ONE REALLY KNOWS HOW GOOGLE DEALS WITH EXCESSIVE LINKS that were accumulated in a short span of time but there are numerous cases of webmasters who experienced difficulties getting their website indexed even after building a lot of links. (This is especially true to new websites).

Thats just nonsense! If you are right, then I can get my competitors banned by submitting them to a 1000 directories.

Popular websites (the big ones) who get over 100 backlinks in a day won't be deindexed! If what you say is true, then Problogger or Copyblogger could have suffered from losing traffic because they get over 100 backlinks from spammers, autoblogs, legit links etc. I just want to point that out.

IF HOWEVER, YOUR BLOG IS NEW, AND IT SUDDENLY GETS 1000 backlinks from web directories and other blogs, then surely, you'll get penalized by Google for spamming. :)

I hear from a lot of people, even when they get hit by google,
they sooner or later bounce back. does not sound like it
would be a forever ban, unless it was something illegal
    or something like that...

The good thing is, when you submit to directories, they don't get approved all at the same time. Meaning, the links will be accumulated gradually. But if the case is, all the links were accumulated all the in same day or in a short span of time, then you could be suspected of spamming.

So why would you get your site banned when you know a better approach, which in this case is to accumulate links gradually. Just a thought. :)

I do not think I have ever had a site banned for anyreason.
I was just stating what I hear from others, but i would like
a way to submit more links, even if I take a temp hit from
google, or just downsize the link submissions to 50-100/day
    and not into the 1000's...

Like Rand Fishkin said; Real SEOs should have at least experienced getting their sites banned by Google.

I don't think it's the quantity, rather the quality. If you get 1000 crap links Google will just ignore you and your rankings will remain the same. It's only if you're founding linking to lots of bad sites you run the risk of some sort of penaly, but even that's unlikely.

Concentrate on getting quality links that appear natural - mixed anchor texts, slow growth etc

About the most commonn sense comment to be made in this thread. It's complete and utter BS to suggest that a large influx of links will get you banned in Google. This is put around by scaremongers and folks who obviously know damn all. Why? If it were remotely true then this would be the easiest way to wipe out competition known to man!!
