I am sure it was a tough call for Google. After all China is a huge market for any company, and nobody would like to give up until there is a way. May be the Chinese government doesn't want them there.

For years, the Chinese gov. has been trying really hard to take everything under control including search results. Baidu, yahoo, bing, and google all are forced to filter out the results the gov. deemed inapproiate.

Not long ago, google was reported by China central TV to be get porn content to the young peopel, and google removed some results.

But this time, Google decided not to give in.:(

Google has been cooperating with China for a long time by imposing self censorship which goes against their basic values and commitments as a company.

Although China is a huge market, the reality is that for China to succeed internationally, the Chinese Government must be able to adapt and work with international companies.

This is a huge call by Google, and I applaud the stand they are taking. I wish others had the balls to follow suit.

    Cheers
    James

A large market, yes, but they aren't valuable to advertisers. Zango for example pays $0.75 to advertise to a US person but they won't pay even $0.01 to advertise to a Chinese person.

Here's another example. Advertisers value an American at $140, a Brazilian at $20 and a Chinese below $1.

That's too bad. A great market would seem be lost by Google. I bit wondering who's behind the "attacks" on G.. Is it the China government?

Well, lots of people do not buy stuff online as they are more likely to do shopping in the local supermarkets, that's why Walmart and Carrifour are so popular here.

And, with the development of China's economy, consuper spending will account for 1/3 of China's GDP. Once the Chinese peopel get used to buy things online, it's really a huge market!!

I doubt it, the gov. simply has to give orders, no need to attack any server.

China's authorities was and still is kinda prudal in "sexual" content, so that's why they require censor results, but that is against Google's belief.
I think China needs Google and Google also needs China, so I really hope things can work out.
