search for a keyword, and then write a reasonably long article with the keyword.
if you are writing about book review, the keywords are the name of author, and the book title. Make sure these 2 keywords appear many times.

I think the above list just about sums it up - 1 thing that I would add is using a LSI structure for your contents. In the past the more a keyword was used then the more likely you would rank for that keyword - As im sure you can see this was a big spam issue which google and other search engines needed to overcome.

This is when the LSI - latent semantic indexing was introduce- in short it is a technique of indexing – analyzing, listing or categorizing certain keywords or phrases in the contents of various websites in such a way that they have contextually and conceptually the same or related intent and meaning despite the different words used in them.

When you want to drive up your SERPS then this is when backlinks will also play a big role when there are a number of websites optimised for the same keywords.

Again LSI is very important and its also important to use a LSI structure for your anchor text also. However this part comes under offsite SEO

Most people subdivide SEO into on-page and off-page...

On-page SEO involves things that you can control on a given page to help that SAME page rank better in the organic SERPs like optimizing <title>, <h1>, <h2>s, meta description (for click-thru-rates, generally not for ranking), meta keywords (for $hit$ and grins... not really for rankings except for the Yahoo! algo LOL), the page name portion of the URL, content, etc.

Off-page SEO involves things that you can do on OTHER pages (internal and external) to help a given URL rank. Personally, I DO sub-divide off-page SEO into "on-site" SEO and "off-site" SEO because there are things that you can do on OTHER pages on your own site that you CANNOT do on other pages on other sites (and visa versa).

For example, I would consider off-page/on-site SEO to include things like your information architecture, implementing site-wide URL canonicalization enforcement, your navigation structures (top nav, left nav, breadcrumbing, footers) and other interlinking strategies for pages on your site, targeted link text used to link to each page on your site, etc. You can't do this on most other sites...

I would consider off-page/off-site SEO to include unnatural link building strategies like article submissions, forum posting, directory submission, blog commenting, widget distribution, etc. where YOU "plant" a link on another site and can control where your site is linked from, which URL gets linked to, and the link text used. I also consider quasi-natural link building techniques to be off-page/off-site SEO like contacting other webmasters in person, by phone, by email and convincing them to drop a link to your site because it benefits there users. Paid links I would also lump into off-page/off-site.

So I guess depending on who you ask, you'll get different answers. If you notice on my blog I have separate categories for on-page SEO, on-site SEO, and link building (i.e. external or off-page/off-site link building).

As Affmarketer and Abs007 say Joomladevs summary is pretty much way cool

Here is something for you to bare in mind when it come to on site or on page SEO >

When preparing your pages and their content and links, think to yourself "Would my Mum, Dad, Husband, Wife, Son or Daughter appreciate this result if they made the search query and found this result?"

If you can hand on heart say you or your closest loved ones your best friends or any surfer would find what you produce is the perfect most relevant result to a search query, then you are on the right track.

There is nothing worse than spending time trawling through crud trying to find the thing most relevant to what is mostly likely in mind for a search query.

Help provide us all all, that's you me and every surfer, as well as the search engines with the most useful informative and relevant result and everyone is happy and the SE's will reward you and your pages accordingly.

For on page seo I would add , in addition to 12 points mentioned by others in this thread, that you need to add ALT and TITLE tags for image tags so your description of the images with keywords is indexed by the search engines.
