Me and my friend only took 4 months in getting 4 page rank for index page of our web. Internal page have 2 and 3 ranks. We did all kind of the activities related to SEO like forum posting, blog posting, article writing, press release directory submission. You can do it just by hard work.
It depends on the individual's capability and how well you plan out your strategies. Sometimes it can take months before getting decent ranking and probably years before making decent bucks to cover back your investment. I'm just one of those people.
