I think the best way to get listed in google is backlinks, not all the site's have the google webmasters tools where we can submit a sitemap. The sitemap just helps to tell search engines all the pages on the site.
    Google uses sitemapname.xml files
    yahoo uses urllistt.txt

A urlist is just a plain text file containing a list of urls (web addresses).

XML sitemaps is the simple and better way.

I always use http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ to generate my sitemaps.

It gives upto 500 pages for free. Thats pretty enough. Let Google crawl and find the rest of the pages! :)

Just create a sitemap.xml for your website using any sitmap generating tool and upload that sitemap to your website root folder. After that submit sitemap.xml in your google webmaster tools. This is the way to indexing very fast.
