Me too. They look great, and are easy as pie to blend, but adding an extra step in the PPC process seems like CTR suicide.
Depends on the site... on some of my sites they do really well (even better than regular Ad Units,) but on others they do terribly. You have to experiment to see what will work.
Do you find they detract from other (non link unit) ads if they're on the same page? Truer words were never spoken!
I think there is great value to having link units because they fit in nicely due to the very little space they take up.
I only use 1 link ad on my site per page, so it performs great for me without making my site look like its there just to make money I suppose if I added a couple of ad units my earnings would increase!
I'm experimenting with them at the moment on a couple of my sites. Not seen any massive improvement on regular CTR as yet, though
I know that, what Im saying is that I only have 1 link unit, and no other types of ads on my site. Just 1 link unit and it performs great.
If they don't perform then I wouldn't personally use them, because they could easily detract from other ads – but when they work well they tend to work much better than the other ads, so detraction isn't an issue
I'm currently trying some link units on a couple of my sites, so far without any great success... but it's early days yet...
I have had great results with link units. I think the best way to use them is to treat them as content and not as ads. If you realize the benefit that your users get when they see relevant ads, then you will begin to treat link units (and adsense ads in general) as a more valuable part of your site. I merge my link units with my site navigation bar, this gives me great results. I do not agree with the fact that the extra step in the process is CTR suicide... but then again that is just my HO (Humble Opinion).
