Alexa is a necessary evil for those of us who use Text-Link Ads, ReviewMe etc. So the better our Alexa ranking, the more we can command in price. In addition to the toolbars for both Firefox and IE, and the Firefox plugin SearchStatus, there have been posts around the web saying that installing the Alexa widget would also improve your rankings. The widget would load with each page view and no matter whether your visitors have the toolbar/plugin installed or not, theoretically it would supply traffic data for Alexa to calculate your ranking. I'm here to say that they don't. I was away on vacation for a week and so wasn't visiting my own site and posting to it on a regular basis. However my traffic was about the same so you'd think that my Alexa ranking would remain constant, if the widget does work. Well my Alexa ranking actually fell by about 30,000 (!) during that one week. Anyone out there have similar experiences, or have an opposing view about it?
I do agree. I use only the searchstatus plugin (at home and at work) and I have shot up so much. I wouldn't mind, but the widget is ugly and would provide nothing for my site :S
for me the widget improved my rank...before that my rank was very very poor as i didn't know what is alexa...then on it's about 600 000 ..... but would not increase more even tough my traffic has increased a lot. SO CONCLUSION - FOR FIRST TIMERS WHO HAVE VERY POOR RANK IT'LL GET YOU INTO SOME GOODY BUT THEN MEETS ASATURATION POINT AFTER WHICH IT WON'T WORK EVEN YOUGH YOUR TRAFFIC INCREASE. SAVVY
@rhyswynne: true that about it being ugly - you can't really match it to anything. @sat123: that's an interesting theory. Maybe it's something that they built into it.
Don't know what you guys are saying here, but I installed only the Alexa widget, with a no show css on my homepage. I dropped from 6 million to under 500,000 in 2 months. Before installing the widget, I couldn't budge!
The widget does work, however even if your hits remain steady the alexa rank is based on an average internet usage, more people with alexa toolbars may have visited sites they wouldnt normally, or more people without might have visited other sites with widgets installed. It makes a server call and it does work, i have spent alot of time trying out theorys for SEO and site benchmarking tools and can confirm it works 100%. Remember to look at other factors that may have adjusted your possition (even error 404s slow loading times or your users coming from a different region in the world).
